LOL, mine does pretty good but when you have more chickens than pens and still hatching.....

He is also the builder so he at least gets to stomp and complain once in a while. I figure this will be my last hatch (till next time) and I can spend the summer getting the new breeding pen's set up so I can really have some fun.

Well it's official 95% hatched out of Teaches Quail eggs I got at POOPS, I thought that was pretty good and happy as the dickens with that. Today was so nice for a change, just piddled and got just enjoy the day playing out at the coop,Good Sunday.

Monty where did the blue come in at? There was one NN and one feather necked chick that were blue with a red head and a little red on the wings. On the hatch it was close to 50/50, still two yet to hatch and the white egg is one of them.

Ok to keep NNs close to standard outcrosses must be made. If you keep a feather necked rooster and hen that you like the looks of out of some of the hatches the percentage of NNs will go up to about a 75/25 split.

But if you were to get a homozygous rooster and breed back to a NN hen of course it would be 100% NNs. It has been my experience that once you accomplish this the thing to do would be to line breed them. If you try to do that they will start to lose body type and the dead in the shell rate goes way up. What they are trying to do is to revert back to the Madagascar Game form from which they were originally bred from.

Here is a pic of a stuffed specimen that is in a museum in Northern France.

As far as the Nana or NaNa genes the general rule used to be that if a chick had a totally bare neck it stood a very good chance of being homozygous (NaNa) and those could pop up any time. It seems that the genes are not just dominant or recessive, it seems that in some birds the genes can be more dominant or more recessive. Like breeding two NNs and getting feather necked birds.

On my last hatch out of our totally NN pen I got 90% NNs. Breeding this breed is fun and challenging. Color, feathering and body type will differ in every hatch. And now that I think of it I have bred more bare necked hens then roosters over the years. Maybe it is carried through the female line? Like male pattern baldness.

Lynn it has been my experience that the only good layers of the game type birds are the Old English. If you do breed to a Cornish, OE or many other breeds it will set the tail carriage way too far up and it will take years to get it back down like it should be if ever at all. You can see that in the Sumatras at the shows now. I imagine that breeders crossed a few of them with longtails to get a fuller, longer tail and now the males hold it way too high. A Sumatra, Yokohama and Cubalaya should have a straight line from the base of the neck to the tip of the tail.

Now a natural way to increase the egg volume would be to use a trap system on the laying nests so you can record which hen layed the most eggs then breed from her and her offspring, only keeping the highest performing layers. It will take a little longer to get to where you want to be but you will be able to keep the breed intact.

Good Morning all.

WOW what a great day yesterday was. I did a whole lot of nothing. Stood around and watched Carl butcher a pig. Talked chicken with Steph all day. Made a new friend, his name is Zeus. A gentle giant Rot.

Steph gave me a, what I think to be, Jap hen. She rose in the cab of the truck home with me when I came back to the house to get "the" book for Steph to drool over. Storey's book of breeds of birds. She thought that was where she was suppose to be. Gotta think of a good name for her. I might have to get her a hunny now.

I guess today I need to get back to reality and clean house and do the outside chores that piled up while it rained.

The butcher paper. But I wrapped the left overs with the sucker. I didnt think I was going to get them to fit in a tupperware container. i forgot all about it. Was headed to bed, went to shut off the kitchen light and seen it.

Ha ha ha, there you go.

I am telling you those were the biggest ribs I had EVER seen in my entire life. OHHHHHHHHHHH tasty also. I can not wait till next weekend to fix that shoulder on the smoker. I have to have it ready by 1 Saturday so I might just start it Friday afternoon. When I told Lynn we could get a pig next week his eyes lit up. SO I guess that is a go.
