Beth,

Have your husband set a pole in the ground. 6-8 feet high is plenty. Set it close, but not inside the poultry pen. Set a leg hold trap on top of the post, and nail the other end of the chain to the side of the post. When the hawk lands on top of the post to watch the birds below (and he will), the trap will spring and when you come outside the bird will be hanging there ready to be dealt with.

Kill it. Don't try to release it somewhere else, that just dumps the trouble on someone else. Just end his miserable existence and bury it. It seems cruel at first, but you depend on your birds for eggs and meat, the least they can expect from you is to be protected from being eaten alive. That's just my 2 cents.

bigokie - cool! What are the birds that are blue with a yellow head and dot? Them are awsome!

Stimpy - advice like that can get a person in trouble...I totally agree with it but deny knowing anything! In an attempt to build populations we put such restrictions that hawk pops are really high. They survive on roadkill for a big part. This has led to animals that are loosing some of their natural hunting abilities.

wow some pic now that you got it up...
Holly chickens! That duck looks HUGE and he was a baby..
That said trapping this jerk is alright for me I agree.
Im just trying to get my mind around this as AnnaBell
takes care of the ckickens. Will the trap break his legs ?
Killing it then would be okay... right ?

I didn't advise against bragging about killing a hawk because I figured it wan unnecessary. Just kill it, bury it and never mention it again. Personally, it wouldn't bother me if every hawk in the world fell out of the skies today.

I was perusing eggbid and came across some silkie eggs going for over $100.00, I was like

but then I scrolled down to the end of the auction page and saw they're HatTrick's silkies. Golly those are some exceptional birds! They must style and fluff them every day.

I co-habitate with red tailed hawks. I don't mind them at all until I catch one preying on my chickens.

Lucky for them, they avoid my area and stick to natural prey.

We had a couple...Harris (I think) that set-up shop on the third hole of our golf course (back when I thought I needed to play to get ahead in life

) Anyways...those fools would come down and try for you. Apparently...nobody saw, heard, or looked into it...but somebody caught one with a back swing

...then they finished it off with a few stomps, multiple whacks, and possibly dorve over it as well! Wish it had been me...stupid bird

Had another one sitting on my quail growing pens again the other day...flew before I could commit a crime
