Note this date: July 12, 2009 - I just got my first egg from this flock! They're 19 weeks old, and have been acting and talking the talk, but not walking the walk for about 2 weeks. Tonight I found a small green egg by the ramp next to the pop door. So one of my EEs gets the prize for First Egg!! How much did this egg cost, you ask? Here's how the numbers work out, roughly:
$37.12 - One dozen pullet chicks, including shipping, etc.
$30.00 - Feed from 2 days to date
$60.00 - Feeders and waterers
$20.00 - Heat lamps and bulbs
$40.00 - Deck box for brooder
$15.00 - Pine shavings
$30.00 - DE @ 50 pounds
$1,500.00 - Materials for hen house and run (labor not included)

$1,737.12 - Total cost of first homegrown chicken egg - small
Now I'll have to get some golf balls or some kind of fake eggs and begin remedial nest box classes...
