Hey guys,

Curious to know what you all used to wrap around your coops for the runs... We have quite a bit of chicken wire but am wondering if the hardware cloth will be better and more durable...

And would like to know how many of you covered your runs or are they "open sky"...

what we have left of work on the COOP itself is the following
th.gif

*Primer seal and paint the outside

* Lay down the rolled roofing

* Attach the roosts and laying boxes inside

* Install pup doors and windows

What we have done

* Build the coop 8X16 ft

* Attach entry door

* Primer seal the indoors

* Lay down the linoleum flooring

I have chicken wire all around all my pens. coops and tractors. Not ideal situation but heck I cant afford all that in hardware cloth. So far (and keeping fingers crossed) I have not had a problem with anything getting into my pens. My problem is I let my birds (most of them) free range. That is when the pred's get them. Bobcat, neighbors (my mother) dogs, coyote and hawks.

On the free range, all my birds are my babies I just can not leave them all cooped up. The ones I do they have plenty of room and have never known anything different. Only my banties are in tractors or condos. These do not get to free range.

Most will tell you go with hardware cloth. It is the most secure. It can be expensive, and hard to find in long rolls.

About a month or so ago I paid about 120 bucks for a 6 ft 100 length roll of chicken wire. I need that in hardware cloth but................

Standard or bantam cochin? and what age?

standard.... snakes cant eat them ;o) once they get adult age.
As far as age we would like something older, super old even is fine by her. We have some gold laced chicks coming our way at poops.... Do you have something in mind ?

My run is chicken wire, a 6 foot tall x 150 foot long roll was about $112 at Atwoods, can't imagin what roll of hardware cloth that size would cost. My run is open top but that will change if it becomes an issue.

The main coop is covered with chicken wire. the add on's 2 of them are covered on top in small welded wire. The type of fencing you would(we did) use on a garden fence. If it was ground level the chicks could get out but the biggers ones could not.

I also have 3 hoop houses made out of cattle panels that is covered in the black plastic netting. So far no problem with pred's but again my dog usually keeps anything and everyone that is scared of her bark away. Including the deer.

I have standard black cochins, unfortunately I only have 2 hens so the only thing I will have is chicks.... I have some that are suppose to hatch around the 8th.

Andis - You said in your post that the eggs would HAVE to be
in the Tulsa/Sapulpa area....I've got eggs out the wazoo and
have given them away to lots of folks. BUT, I'm clear over here
in Tahlequah. Not that I, or others, didn't answer, we're just
not in your area. Hope you can find what you need .

Have a good one !

My DH would have my bottom if I got rid of a hen. I have 2 hens and 2 roosters. I did have 3 hens but the heat got one of them, if I had 3 I would gladly............

Ok so my dh walked up behind me and said depends on what she has....lol. He was the one who got the black cochins. I will PM you with my number.
