Lynn that is the way to do it. I want to get some pigs but my Lynn is shuffling his feet about it. Maybe next spring.

Of all the chickens I have them cochins are the best/worst (however you look at it) at tearing up some ground and fast. I call all mine super diggers.

Whirlwind, I made my pen from two hog panels bent at six feet in an L shape then tied with baling wire doubled in three places(top, middle, and bottom) on the two opposite corners, then I put 2 sheets of tin over the back part of the top and one sheet down the back, I turn it to which ever direction they need protection, now it is to the south for protection from the sun, north for protection from the cold winds in winter, you could put some 2x4 welded wire over the rest of the top if you are concerned about the Bobcat, I used those plastic hang on horse feed troughs for water(tied down on the handle with baling wire so they can't root them off the fence) and I put their feed on the ground in the middle of the pen after I move them each morning and evening. If you move the pen every day with one or two pigs your neighbors will not even smell or know you have pigs. Hope this helps, Lynn

The swine flu has already hit Durant. The school sent out information that said if you are sick stay home and don't go into the public unless absolutely required. Even keep other family away within the home. Not sure if it's a whole lot of hype but swine flu is supposed to be more catching than normal. I don't think they are testing everyone who gets sick though. Just treat any flu as possible swine flu. Oh yeah, you are supposed to stay home until you have a full 24 hours of no symptoms.

You don't have to have a fever or losing fluids from either end to be swine flu. Severe body aches is one of the biggest complaints.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks for the info Greybear. Will show it to my DH Tom. He is the construction Superintendent around here. I have yet to ask him to expand the coop.

Its pouring rain here again. Rain gage showed 1.5" this morning. I need to go to the garden if it will let up a little.

Well, one of us is.

I kept missing out on the birds I wanted. They either went higher for what I wanted or were POed for an amount higher than I wanted to go. All that was left that I was interested in were some big white rock hens and some geese, but figured they were a lost cause, too. There was a guy there who is always driving the price of geese up over 15 to 20 dollars and figured he would this time, too.

I was about giving up on the evening and was loading out the stuff I bought (in the pouring rain, don'cha know?) and came back in to find my wife beaming ear to ear and Carla congratulating her.

She said "I bought the geese!" Uh oh, thinking here we go, with $40+ worth of geese. How much?

"$4 apiece!"

She put me to shame.

The best I did was some Bourbon Red turkey hatching eggs for a buck apiece, but I'm convinced that was just because the folks who were selling them were just being nice by no doing a PO.

Those geese sure are going to look pretty out on my pond. Right now they are gazing longingly at it from a chicken tractor as my ducks frolic in the water right in front of them. Once they are acclimated to my place and know where the food is, I'll let them out to play with the other kids.

Life is good.

Luvs2g, thanks for the info on the Cochins, I am in the process of getting three pairs of Standard size Cochins today, was considering them as candidates for chicken tractors, also Anyone out there have Standard size Partridge colored Cochin Cock they want to get rid of???? I need one for a hen I am getting today, would be willing to trade back some eggs or chicks next spring for him?!?!?!
Monty, I am going to pick up two trios of Blue Toppies today also, are you interested in some eggs from them????
BigOkie, can you Pm me when you get the chance??

Lynn

Well, I have work to do around here, but I'm not quite ready for the rain to stop down here in Parched County, Oklahoma. The grass in my fields is bone dry and needs all the help it can get.

Another day or two of this stuff would be fine by me.

It has DEFINITELY rained too much here. I need to find the rain gear & head out to feed everyone now. The weather radar doesn't show any signs of relief in the near future .... it looks as if it could rain steady for another day or 2

The auction lasted at least until 11 pm, maybe later. We left before 11 and they still had probably a dozen cages of birds left.

Carla, do you know if the Flemish Giants were pedigree? I recently sold some Flemish Giants on Craiglsist that don't have a pedigree. Sold them for $25 each to some 4-H kids.

Yes they were pedigreed, I'm sure that's why they sold so high ... the price started at $75 each & 2 guys were bidding against each other.

It was much better than expected. I thought there would be fewer people there because of the rain and football games, but the place was full of people and birds. We had fun! Now I'd better figure out where to put the birds I bought last night. It was raining last night so I put them in the spare bedroom. I've got to get them outside NOW!!! Rain or no Rain!

I haven't had time to post much with the little one. She's 2 months old already. Time flies...
We had a massive tragedy this morning. We are down 45+(some won't make it) chickens, 1 blue slate turkey and 1 muscovy duck. All but 3 of the chickens were this years hatch and the pullets had started laying. We are also down 1 bird dog.

This is the second time she got into my chicken pen. I had it dog proofed ( I thought) after the first time. She moved bricks and landscape timbers after breaking out of her pen. She massacred them. I still can't believe it. I worked so hard to keep those babies alive, I hatched all but 10 of them. My blue splash marans, cuckoo marans, turkens just gone. She killed them just to kill. She killed my daughters 4 silkies that she picked out at Atwoods and was lucky enough to get 3 hens and a roo. Black sex links and EE that my daughter picked out. I struggled so hard to brood and take care of these birds when I was huge pregnant and it took her less than 30 minutes to kill them. My husband took care of her. I still feel like crying.

I would like to replace some of them from the folks going to POOPS. I would like silkies, marans, EE's and turkens. Also interested in any pullets that are available. Thanks.
