Q - I have never had a definite explanation given to me for the reason that birds develop a matted eye that has a distinctive foul odor,
sickbyc.gif
but I would recommend culling the bird with that kind of distinctive odor eye infection. Even if the bird recovers, it is likely to be a carrier and get sick again if stressed. The stinky stuff that comes out of the eye is highly contagious (be sure to wash your hands with some bleach water or other sanitizing solution) and if your other birds get it in their system, you will have a whole flock with whatever that stuff is.

Yes like most of you, I had started getting a headache listening to that auctioneer on steroids ( Jerry if you read this, start selling tylenol LOL ). We never did get to make any dinner plans as the auction ended late and you can't bring kids into a Casino, boy was I hungry when I got home.

KT, gosh I wish you had stayed & bought some of those guineas last night. They sold for way cheap ... I think all sold for around $2 ea, some a little more, some less. I was selling newly hatched guinea chicks for $4 each earlier this year. Anyway, those will be our last young guineas. Gerald thinks we need to sell the adults so that we can use their pens for some of our newest chicken additions. We need the 2 guinea pens for a pen for our blue laced red wyandottes, and a pen for our blue copper and splash marans. Anyway, if anybody is interested in adult guineas, they are for sale. I guess I need to advertise them on craigslist. Also, we do have a few that are around 4 months old in the growout pen with some young turkeys and chickens.

Oh and as for sexing guineas, the males have a bigger helmet (thingy that sticks up on their head) and bigger red earings. Also, the females have a double syllable call and the males only have a single syllable call.

But the females can imitate the male's single syllable call, so the females can make both noises.

The guineas that Teach and I bought ranged from $1.75 for the younger ones in the 9 hole cage to $2.50 for the ones that were a few months old. Yes, way cheap. As a buyer, I was more than pleased - particularly since I bought some this spring as day olds for $2.50 - $3.00 and had a 50% mortality rate on them. I took them all to a friend of mine - since I still have guinea eggs in the incubator and about 15 adult guineas running around (and up and down the outside of the fence and into traffic)

It was awesome to get to meet Maribeth!! She's such a sweet person!! The kids and I had a lot of fun checking out all the critters! I think my favorites were the runner ducks and the Tom Turkey that likes to be petted

What a small world that you and Okiemommy knew each other long before becoming chicken addicts. Now that I have met both of you, I have to say that ya'll must have had a very bright and talented graduating class.

Glad you got your coop moved from J's house to your house - and that no one was injured in the process. Now, it is time to start filling up the coop.

We did have a talented graduating class

You got a good deal on guineas. I paid $4.69 for each of mine. I bought 6 last Spring and another 12 this Fall. All I could get in the Spring was Pearl, but I found Lavender, White and Pearl this Fall. I like my guineas. I think they are cute, but obnoxious.

Yeah, there was something weird about that guy. Everybody who has been to more than one auction knows you don't jump at the auctioneers first called price, you let him drop the price a bit before you go. But time after time he jumped in at $4 or $5... for roosters! With the floor that high it can only go up. Those things he was buying never go for more than $4.50 at Blanchard, but some of them were going for nine and ten bucks.

Good for the sellers, of course, but not real sharp bidding I don't think.

And I think I got some of GB1's birds out in one of my tractors. Real beauties, those. I think they are Bantams, though, and I was planning on mixing them with my Dark Cornish from Ideal to mix up the blood a little.

Great seeing you and the rest of the folks, though, Al. We were a little tired but we did have fun.

Okiemommy - the fact that you were able and willing to get your grades up in 10, 11 and 12 grades speaks volumes for your character. You are bright and no quitter.
It is always fun to see the animals again through the eyes of children who have not been around the various varieties.

Al, I still have Mr. rooster on hormones. I was too tired today to even make a call and get him picked up. I guess I was too obvious about wanting that old bird, although that emaciated but tall Buff Orphington went above $10 and then got POd because the owner wanted at least $15 for him.

It just started raining. Fortunately, I got a cover on the top of the newest rabbit's cages just a little while ago.

We will have to do that again. Unfortunately, between fatigue and cold medicine, my brain wasn't functioning at top speed. Our brain slowness must have been caused by sleep deprivation.
