Your Sportman and my Dickey incubators are about the same, what's the problem? Maybe I can help.

Thanks MAllen...I keep losing chicks a couple hours after they are hatched. I have a seperate incubator and hatcher. They seem to do fine in the bator but when I put them in the hatcher they stop and don't hatch. Les sent me the site to download the book to my bator cause I bought it used even though it was only used one season. I'll probably discover it's just me...maybe I need to go back to the styrophome ones...I think I'm a little smarter than those..but this sportsman is kicking my booty....LOL

Good luck with it. Of course once they go in the hatcher there are only two variables, temp & humidity. If those are right then there is really no reason for them to stop. Hope you get it figured out.

Matt

The bators do need to be kept in a stable envoroment as they don't hold heat nearly as well as a styrofoam model does. In the winter when I have my bator and hatcher running they will heat the room they are in with the door shut and the vents closed. You might try taking some 1in styrofoam sheets and covering the outside of the bator with that using double stick carpet tape to hold it on. Just don't cover the vents in the back.

Les, I moved the ones ready to hatch to a foam bator without a turner...don't have any more ready to come out until this weekend so maybe by then I'll have it fixed.

Thanks.

Does the hatcher use wafer's on the thermostate?? If it does, take the wafer off and shake it, you should hear water inside it. If you don't then the wafer is bad & needs to be replaced. Just a thought.

A problem that I had a hard time finding once delt with temp spikes. Sometimes it would do great and then there were times it would not shut off. finally found that the wafer was expanding unevenly and was missing the micro-switch with the button on the wafer. Since then I change the wafer out with about every fourth or so hatch.

not usually but 10 or so bucks is cheap insurance when a sportsman holds over 300 eggs and I have paid upwards of 25 dollars a dozen for eggs. Shoot I have two spares sitting here on the computer table now!

They are like heat lamp bulbs, never go out till everything is closed.

evening folks about to climb into bed...sorry I haven't been around. Been in San Antonio with my dad. He is in bad shape still. Not sure if Shawn had filled y'all in...haven't read anything in several days. His lungs are failing and his heart is weak. Will check back in a few days. I would appreciate some prayers that he finds peace...he has lived a very angry life.

Thanks...

Prayers for your dad, and you and your family Teach. You're a great soul; whether it seems like it or not, I'm sure your caring makes a world of difference to him.

It looks like you have a nice variety of poultry. Are you planning to show any of your birds at the Shawnee show in December?

Edited to add disclaimer: This group is a wonderful group of people, many of whom are addicted to poultry auctions, hatching eggs and acquiring new poultry. If you currently have no addictions regarding poultry, beware - there are enablers on here (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty

) who want everyone else to find the poultry and eggs that they themselves would love to have.
