Okies in the BYC The Original

Okay, I finally got time to sit down and read thru all the posts.

My weekend began on Thursday. Had to get everyone situated and settled in for the weekend so I built my chicken condo. I finally have empty cages prebuilt! Finished around 5 am Friday morning. Got 2 1/2 hours sleep. Woke up running. Corey, Liz and I went to the poultry club meeting (Grace & Garry run it). We came home and started prepping birds. We got finished at 2:30 am which is when I wanted to leave for Fayetteville. Took a shower and jumped in the SUV to go to Fayetteville. Girls promptly went to sleep. I had bought a GPS and while messing with the settings I got it on simulation mode. That cost quite a bit of time. Got there at 8:30 am with coop-in ending at 9.

Junior Show Results:

1st Show
Best Continental
4 Best of Breed
1 Reserve of Breed
3 Best of Variety
4 RV
1 1st Place

2nd Show
Same except Maran hen got BB instead of Best Continental. 2nd Judge had written nonstandard breed on her card.

*Different birds got different titles but it still worked out to the same numbers.

Happy with the results. We had brought 14 birds in all.

Corey & Liz did showmanship. This is their 2nd showmanship competition. Corey was running around with my APA Standards today so it had a good effect on her and she took everything in stride. I wish they would have broken the competition down into to age categories though. I'm really noticing that Corey is getting better with competing. In the beginning, it tore her up to not win (her or her birds) and she would get so upset. This time, she got fired up and just grabbed the chicken by it's comb. (Yes, that an original Dande saying!

) Liz was not feeling very well so she didn't really get into it at all. She spent the biggest part of the day watching TV in the SUV.

Kendra and TJ did an excellent job with Showmanship. Kendra even got a trophy. There was quite a few contestants. Congrats!

I know this was Sooner's daughter's first Showmanship contest. It was great she jumped out there. I hope you two plan on coming back for more shows.

I'm so proud of all of our Junior BYCers!

There was two pairs of birds that the girls had to bid on in the silent auction. Corey got a pair of Barred Rock bantams and Liz got a pair of Black Wyandotte bantams. (I had read about the spell check issue... Cammie don't feel bad. Spell check doesn't like Dominique either. Although, I'm not putting you in the same category as a chicken breed.

) Then, I made a deal on a trio of MGB. The roo is a Lemon Blue. (I was already toying with the idea of trying to find one.) The two pullets are Black Reds. The guy said they should throw 50% on each. The MGB class didn't get certificates at the show because there wasn't enough entered. I think there has to be two exhibitors and 10 birds usually to get money and ribbons at most shows. That's okay. We have to only get 3 more MGB to have that taken care of!

So we took off from the show to deadhead over to meet up with Monty and about 30 minutes later, I remembered! I didn't get Grace's jacket!!! Sorry, Grace. I did get a Cement Show booklet for you though. Using the stupid GPS, I get lost again. Funny thing. When I'm using paper maps I'm not lost all the time... At least I'm not simulating this time. Wasn't that bridge out when we were having Fall POOPS? In my driving state, we were lucky I didn't just keep driving. (At this point out of 72 hours, I've slept 2 1/2 hours.) Finally, Monty was able to get me to McDonalds. Why do all the roads just go over the Interstate in Choctaw? I couldn't find a ramp. Anyway, we got the Shamo bantams. Yes, this is now 9 more chickens than we left with. I'm absolutely most definitely do not have a chicken addiction! The Shamo are so sweet. They look mean but have such a calm and docile heart. Corey is really wanting them. I'm trying hard to stick with the "these are my chickens so hands off" rule!

Sorry but I can't help it. I could just see Corey using a Shamo in Showmanship.

She would too.

We stopped at a motel just after leaving Choctaw. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep. Actually, I wouldn't of had any problems sleeping in any position. We got up and left early enough to get breakfast. We were in the drive thru and one of the roosters crowed. The lady at the window asked if she just heard a rooster. I told her it was just one of the kids.

I had stored my home location in the GPS. As I prepared to make the final turn at home, the GPS voice came on and said to turn left and off road to location.

No, I don't have to "off road" to my home.

So this was My Weekend. It went so fast and now I have found I STILL don't have enough cages. However, I'm getting a good night's sleep before I get started on the next "chicken condo". Everyone at least has an improvised pen for the moment. The Barred Rocks are escape artists!

It was great to see all of the BYCers this weekend! We had a good sized crowd there!

Monty, thanks again for the Shamo bantams. They are so cool. Oh yea, they LOVE chopped corn. (I gave it too them for leg color.) I still cannot believe they are so gentle. That's why part of the reason that Corey was them so badly.

I feel the sleepies coming on.

Disclaimer: there are some mighty fine folks on this thread, but many have serious addictions to hatching poultry, poultry auctions and acquiring poultry. If you do not already have some of those addictions, we have enablers who will try to get you addicted also.

So, is there a reason you have only two breeds of chickens and have you ever considered expanding to another breed or two and maybe acquiring a few turkeys and guineas to make more interesting noises than chickens?

Actually, I think you were probably trying to get in you truck because you still remembered that my house was on the way to a store with a deadline - and I kept talking. It was nice to visit with you and Jared and I am really glad that Jared was able to get some new basketball shoes.

Oh yea, I had forgotten to check my calendar and had 2 chicks that had hatched in the egg turner while we were gone. One of the chicks has a little boo boo on it's comb. I suppose it's from the turner.

The chicks were a nice surprise.

elrod - Welcome to the board! I find it funny that you call 25 birds a small flock. I have 5. Lol

Welcome to all our other newcomers as well! I'm horrible at remembering everyone's screen names and gettin back to everyone who has commented.

Anyway. I couldn't find a red light when I set up the brooder last week, so I used yellow. Someone suggested to me tonight that I could use a red floodlight. I'll get one from Walmart tomorrow and try that.

I think it's bedtime. It's late and I'm tired.

faerie - So sorry you lost one, but congrats on the rest! Walmart actually does sell the red and plain heat lights that we use. I bought a plain light one there last month; I've never used a red one, probably need to think about that i guess. The red lets them sleep I think ?? Although I never put a light on mine past a few weeks, since they stay in the house or garage anyway.

Well I looked at the clock after I posted and realized that since I have to work two 14 hour days back to back this week (I have insurance exams Wed/Thurs, which means I can't work my mon/wed/fri rotation) if I didn't get it tonight, it wouldn't be bought. So I went to Walmart (J's here, so it's not like I left my kid alone in the house) and bought the red floodlight. We'll see how that works.
