Our friend that got Matt started found an extra grinder in his closet so I am using that, once I get it done then I borrow his deydrator & squisher!

We did 5obs of meat last year but son wants to do more this year. I see alot of grinding in his future.

Oh yeah, Hi everyone!!

Faerie, I just love the names on those birds. It makes me smile everytime I think of it.

I want to thank everyone for the well-wishes for my grandma. I didn't get a chance to reply last night. I was trying to get hte house in order before I start the new job tomorrow. Plus I've been dealing with a migraine for two days.

The only birds I have had go broody, never hatched the eggs. It started with two guineas on a nest and then to of my RIR hens stole the nest. They gave up after two out of 24 eggs hatched. We took the babies to raise in a brooder because it was going to be a staggered hatch. I ended up hatching a couple of eggs daily until they all hatched about two weeks later. As soon as I realized the hens had given up, I popped the eggs into the bator. Of course, there is one always running around here. All of the eggs hatched. Some were sold in auctions at POOPS and the rest went to Roy when he came down.

Thanks, I like Volcano the best.

Me too... which is why I got him for my girls that are a bit too light/have too much white (Blizzard and Cyclone). Tornado's color is coming in great (the pics are a month old already... he was still a youngun) and I think he'll be a good compliment to Tsunami and Sandstorm. I also am working on buying a buff columbian hen just in case I have to breed back Volcano's offspring (there is such a thing as too many melanisers

) We'll see.

Personally I think deer tastes a lot like beef, except way less fat. If I'm going to grind the meat for jerky or burgers, my husband and I usually process. If I want steaks or roasts, I take it to a friend that processes meat for a living.

HAH! That's for James' 14 year old lab mix, the beloved Lucy Lu. She only eats the pedigree... picky girl. We humor her because she's ooold and frail, and she's such a GOOD dog.

I like using broody hens but there are drawbacks there. I let any of mine that go broody hatch their eggs but I have found I can't depend on them to be broody when I want/need them to be. Plus I have a few that won't hold the nest long enough.

I totally understand that. I had one go broody, then 5 more joined her to hatch the eggs I gave her so then I snuck a few more under them. But now I want to hatch some more and the 14 that hatched together are all helping each other take care of the little ones. That leaves me with only a few that are laying and only a couple of those are kind that go broody (silkie and cochin). I have quite a few D'Uccle eggs that I have checked the fertility and really would like to hatch, uggggg.

So I keep hoping to see one of them go broody!

We process all of our own. Steaks or ground. For me deer can have a strong taste if you kill an older one and as with anything else it has a lot to do with how well it is processed.

That is what the jerky thing looks like that we use.
