Jeannie,
Would you mind sharing your recipe for pot roast in the crockpot? I seem to overcook everything in the crockpot - or not get it done.

Actually mine comes from the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook(1997 edition), I have found with my crockpot that my "keep warm" setting cook's more like "Low" and my "low" cook's high, and the "high" setting cooks... well burnt..lol and my crock pot is only 5 years old..lol

Maybe try cooking on your lowest setting possible... other than that I would use more water. If you dont have a Better Homes and Garden Cook book let me know I will PM you the recipe.

Jeannie

Thank you for the suggestions. I have a ton of cookbooks (something else I "used to collect") but the basic cookbooks like the Betty Crocker Cookbooks are about 30+ years old - before crockpots were popular. I will look at some of them and see what I can find. Your thoughts on the temperature are helpful. My current crockpot has only 4 choices - cook high for 4 or 6 hours or cook low for 8 or 10 hours - then it goes to "keep warm" for an indefinate period of time. I probably need to use the low setting more often.

Seramas have the creeper gene from the Jap blood. That combined with the low fertility rate and shipping probably doomed the whole hatch. I wished it would of turned out better for you.

Merry Christmas to you, too BarnSwallow - and to all the Cookes and everyone/thing in the Cooke household!

Just remember you have to name your first born after me..lol

Jeannie

If the firstborn was male, would it be...

A boy named Jeannie

My Bad my copy is a 1989:

Here ya go and for anyone else for that matter that would like it.

1( 2.5-3 lb) Beef Chuck pot Roast

2 Tbls Cooking Oil

3/4 Cup of water, dry wine or tomato juice(I actually use alot more water to nearly cover the roast in the pot)

1 Tbls Worcestershire Sauce

1 Tsp Instant Beef Bouillon granules

1 Tsp Dried crushed basil

3 Medium potatoes

8 Small carrots

2 Small onions

2 Stalks of Celery

1/4 Cup all purpose flour

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Trim fat from roast. In a Dutch oven brown roast on all sides in hot oil.
Thinly slice vegetables and place in bottom of the crock pot.
Cut roast to fit in cooker if too big.
Place atop vegetables.
Combine water, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon granuales and basil.
Pour over meat and vegatables.
Cover, Cook on low heat setting for 6 hours-10(depending on your crock pot)

Prepare Gravy: Measure pan juices skim fat, if needed add water to equal 1.5 cups. Combine flour and 1/2 cup cold water
Stir into juices, return to pan. Cook and stir till thickened and bubly. Cook and stir for one minute. Season to taste...

Teach...you are so right...they are sweet, cute, lovable but the words stop with "w/o blemish....LOL When they are good they are very good but when they are bad they are VERY BAD...as in when the stupid Oklahoma weather keeps changing. I love my babies but sometimes I just don't like some of them. It's like training a litter of pups...cute and loveable but you still got to break the bad habits the parents let go for 4 years. LOL

Can I get an amen from the choir on that one? 95% of the difficulties my students have is due to their parental units. You know we spend so much time teaching these kids how to read, math, grammar, science, history and test them to death over it but the most imporant job with the most long reaching affects to society as a whole any human being has is being a parent. Do we teach that? No, we assume the parents are teaching this but when looking at the rate teenage pregancy, crime, drop-out rate, mental health system, illiteracy, poverty, etc, etc proves that our children are not taught the basic fundementals of being an adult raising a healthy, well adjusted child. Do not get me wrong, I expect my students to learn to read, math, history, science, etc but I also try to teach them how to be functioning individuals in society, because if we as educators do not step up and teach them who in the h3ll is going to?

Oops sorry I will step down off my soap box now.
