Well said Less, as usual you are the voice of reason, and I do agree for the most part.

It is mostly about raising animals in a more humane manner than factory farmed critters are, and in a manner that is more environmentally sustainable. Not to mention the satisfaction that comes from a self-sufficient lifestyle. Maybe I'll explain it in more detail some time when I have the time.

At the moment this Polyface groupie is going out to process 4 turkeys and 4 more roos raised the Salatin way for some more of the best tasting meat he has tasted in a long long time.

Well Im back long enough to say hello. Got my stand and a shelf built and everything is put up and organized. Now I get to head over to a friends house and pick up a new water pan for my incubator that he was kind enough to make for me. Talk at yall later.

Well another bummer day here! Had to cull two more pigeons, still waiting on meds to be shipped in. Then I discovered I lost all three of my Asils last night!

I had let them free range because they were the only thing big enough to not be bothered by the hawk. Well we went shopping late yesterday and I forgot to lock them up.

I guess it was coyotes.I just can't believe a hawk would have been able to carry them away. So disapointed.

On another varmit note. I was reading on another forumn where a guy in eastern Ok. had spotted a fisher cat on his property. :eek:Apparently several in his area had seen or heard them over the last two years! They are a northern animal and not supposed to be anywhere near Ok. Maybe the warming is moving things around. That won't be a good critter to have around!

Doodle sorry to hear about your losses again I live in eastern Oklahoma and we are starting to see alot of animals that are not native to this area. We are really having a problem with possums right now but we are starting to get them at least one a night sometimes 3

Hello everyOkie - I hope you all had a wonderful day - it was so nice outside - more of that kind of weather, please! I ended up with 11 eggs today out of 12 birds!

OklaDoodle I can't believe you lost your Asils - did you get any eggs from them to hatch? And I'm so sorry about your pigeons - do you think this PMV thing is something that was introduced by a bird you recently acquired? Terrible!

Quenston - that first photo looks like your child is holding a goose-sized chicken! Those birds are huge - and I loved the photos of your setup. There is a photo of a rooster with a whitish neck and a brown or red body and whitish saddle feathers and a blackish tail - what kind is that? Dutch Belted Rooster?

Teach - I called and left a message on Richard the Shamo dealer's phone. (Is Richard SplitSocket222?)

BetsyOK - you are on my list to contact - I think you have a couple of Silkie pullets or hens to send to Teach? I'm leaving Tuesday morning and if you are anywhere off of 412 west of Tulsa I can stop by and them pick up if that works for you. I'll PM you.

Now I'm going to get cleaned up to go out to eat with Jack's family - PF Chang YUM!!

Al they are using set-ups like this in the UK for free ranged birds. The barns are floored with curtain sides that can be rolled up for access to pasture. There are roosts and nesting boxes in the barn along with the waterers and feeders. When it is time to move to another pasture they roll the sides down after the birds have gone to roost, hook a big tractor on ot and pull it to a new pasture. This will also help keep parasites and sickness at bay too.

The poultry raising portion of Heifer International's farm works similarly to this also. Their large chicken tractors are moved by tractors daily in a large, flat pasture, so the turf is not damaged and the manure keeps the pasture very fertile. They are an inspirational group altogether, raising nearly all their food, including a huge coop vegetable garden. Of course, they are much, much more than that--that's only a miniscule portion of their overall operation.

Beth, Richard (SplitSocket) is a friend and near neighbor--only a few miles away. If you're interested, when you come here Tuesday, I can lead you to his house if it is convenient for both of you. Les and Teva generally stop to see both of us when they are out this way.

Beth make Teach get his own birds, after all he is off work till after the New Year. LOL

I would love to be there when Teach hit that yard. There are so many good looking birds there his head would just pop trying to decide which to get.

Doodle sorry to hear of the loss. Did you at least find feathers or some other confirmation of the loss? If there are trees around I wouldn't write them off for at least 3 or 4 days. They may wander back up later.
