I hate it, with a passion. Chickens aren't vegetarians. They need animal protiens too. It disgusts me to see stuff like soybean meal, or cottonseed meal, or whatever else kind of plant they try and up the protien levels with, added into the feed. And they advertise it that way! "no animal by-products"

Even the top show breeders will tell you that chickens need some source of animal protien!

Thanks! I do my best for them. About once a week or so I'll give them some high protein dog food (small bites) mixed in with their regular feed, or some catfish food, or cat food, which ever I have around at the time. I also propagate meal worms, and have given meat scraps from time to time. Then of course, they devour any bugs that stray into their pens.

Me too, then I wouldn't have to buy this, that, and the other just to create my own feed.

Yeah, I know. I looked on their website a little while ago. They definitely have better protein & calcium levels in their feed. Also, I saw where their company delivers to neighboring states including Oklahoma. I guess maybe I should call them & see where the nearest dealer is. It might be worth driving a longer distance & buying more in bulk for quality feed.

cayanne pepper, flour, corn meal, corn starch, baby powder (not talc)....

styptic powder (blood stop) if you have any on hand.

We broke down and cauterized it. It would not stop bleeding. He is currently walking around the living room and doing fine. Thanks for the advise though.

Nope it was all Andrew. I just held Big Boy and a cup of feed in front of his face. He laid really still and ate the starter food treat.

I wouldn't mind some of that feed also. Can we get an Okie road trip scheduled?

The blood was just pouring out like a faucet. It soaked a rag in less than 5 minutes. We decided the wuickest way would be to cauterize it, so that's what we did. We let him wander around the house for about 5 minutes and it still wasn't bleeding, so we put him back in the coop.

We have used the sugar before on rabbits and it worked great, but it just wasn't going fast enough this time.
