Morning all! Checked birds this morning and found a pen of young chicks all sick! Lost 7or8 last night and looks like at least that many more won't make it! They have been doing great.Can't figure out what happened so fast unless a wild bird or mouse brought something in. I have given them auremycin but several already won't drink. This is the first batch of sick I've had so far. Usually once I make it thru all the rainy spring weatherI do okay with chicks. Although I have noticed that it is much harder to raise chicks here than it was back in Okla. Don't know if the humidty has something to do with it or what. Anyway it was not a good morning to get up too!
New taco is doing good. It should with all those full foutains all to itself! Momma is being good mother.

Wayne : Too bad on the birds, I hate when I can't figure out what hit them and that kinda stuff comes on so fast. Good luck with them and hope you can save a few.

Well today has already been very interesting!
First off, I let myself run out of chick feed, so Dad made a special trip to town to get a bag. I open it up, and instead of brown crumbles of feed, I see fuzzy greenish clumps

I always buy this brand of feed and I always buy it from the same store, but this is the first time I've ever gotten molded feed!

The second thing was a very good surprise! I got a large padded envelope in the mail with a return address that was vaguely familiar. What was in this package? None other than an original painting of my avatar picture from our very own artsyRobin! This was literally the look on my face -

As far as weekend plans go, the kids are going to the lake with some friends and Andrew and I are working on the house. The lake is only 10 miles from home, so if we decided to take a break, we can always drive out there. I am building a closet today and then we are going to do the last bit of drywall. Tomorrow, we start painting. We would do it today, but I promised Lauren that she could paint her bedroom. She even has her very own miniature paint roller. I figure a smaller roller might mean a smaller mess. I hope so anyways.

Well the hatch is on and they are popping out very well....................

This hatch is kinda special because there are several of my projects eggs in this hatch. As many of you know I am working on breeding a new type meat bird and have several combo's hatching today, here are the combo's.

White Rock Rooster over Cornish X laying hen's that I raised special to get to laying age.

White Rocks from pure good breeding stock.

Standard White Cornish, trio my pride and joy.

White Rock Rooster over Pure bred Standard Cornish Hen's.

Standard White Cornish Rooster over Cornish X Hen's.

Standard White Cornish Rooster over pure White rock Hen's

Cornish X trio's mated to each other.

Standard white Cornish over Cornish X hen's.


These should give me some good stock to work with and keep good log's of there Traits and growth rates, along with new pure parent breed stock. These birds will then be bred with any and all of the above combinations to judge where we should start with F-2 generation. All this may take several years but I have plenty of time to work with it.

been a busy day, coop and run upkeep- i have a houdini d'uccle who make a mistake yesterday got out when the big chickens were out, and Barny caught her- she seems fine today though- meanwhile- anyone want to trade a couple silkies for a bantam cochin pullet??

has anyone tried to catch a 2 month old chick that has fly tape stuck under their wing- now that was a site to see!!

Well I hope this turns this page over,we have been on the same one since Thursday!

Lost several more chicks during the day. The rest are eating and therefore drinking the medicated water so maybe they will pull thru. There was some bloody poop intheir pen so I took them all out and put them on wire so they will have no contact whit poop till they get over this. I will also dienfect their old pen. What ever it was hit fast and hard.

Talked to daughter in Kansa,Ok. she said it was really hot there today. Was here too,we got in the pool today. Went to the local auction today,sat there for two hours and they were still selling junk so I left before the birds and animals sold. I wish they would start the junk early and get it over with. Thats what drove away a lot of the poultry sellers before,its just startin g to come back and they are doing it again.

How is everyones gardens and flowers doing. I have some new hollihocks blooming for the first year,neat pastel colors including yellow! Also have dark red ones. Will have seed later if anyone wants any.
