Beth it sounds like the temp was just a tad too high. Did you keep track of when you put in the eggs? Did they hatch on day 21 or earlier?
Humidity that is too high can also cause this problem. I use a digital temp/humidity do-dad that is used in a reptile enclosure that I got at Petsmart for around 10 or so dollars.
With the wet weather that we have been having I have actually not added a drop of water to our incubator this year and the humidity was right at 45% and we had good results with our hatches.
I had a BIG head when I started this. AnnaBell checked out the bator threw 4H and it came with class room stuff. Followed them step by step. It did not come with a humidity reader and he said it was okay. They did start hatching earlyer.. first one on day 19! Chickens are not as easy as people think and it has opened my eyes for sure. Being from L.A. all city girl to growing my girls all country has been a real trip for sure!!
So next time if their is a next time a trip to petsmart I will be going... Thanks everyone for the support. I was in Seattle this summer in the best weather ever. Jacket and in a house on the sound watching sea life drinking my coffee. Went sailing, hiking, shopping at pikes market and all of it in a lite jacket in July. Funny thing is when I came home I really missed it. Heat and all. Oklahoma is a great place to be and Okies make it so.
Have a good day every one
