Beth it sounds like the temp was just a tad too high. Did you keep track of when you put in the eggs? Did they hatch on day 21 or earlier?
Humidity that is too high can also cause this problem. I use a digital temp/humidity do-dad that is used in a reptile enclosure that I got at Petsmart for around 10 or so dollars.

With the wet weather that we have been having I have actually not added a drop of water to our incubator this year and the humidity was right at 45% and we had good results with our hatches.

I had a BIG head when I started this. AnnaBell checked out the bator threw 4H and it came with class room stuff. Followed them step by step. It did not come with a humidity reader and he said it was okay. They did start hatching earlyer.. first one on day 19! Chickens are not as easy as people think and it has opened my eyes for sure. Being from L.A. all city girl to growing my girls all country has been a real trip for sure!!
So next time if their is a next time a trip to petsmart I will be going... Thanks everyone for the support. I was in Seattle this summer in the best weather ever. Jacket and in a house on the sound watching sea life drinking my coffee. Went sailing, hiking, shopping at pikes market and all of it in a lite jacket in July. Funny thing is when I came home I really missed it. Heat and all. Oklahoma is a great place to be and Okies make it so.
Have a good day every one

Jason Cooke - Thanks so much for helping Rodney and Matt out last night. You were Awesome. I think you were recruited last night so Welcome Aboard... LOL

Jeannie Cooke and Aleisha - I appreciate you stepping up for me and taking care of the concession stand and making sure everyone was fed and got good food...

Austin and all the other kids that were there - Thanks for occupying Montanas time at the auction and for wearing him out, he was out like a light as soon as we got home.

Once again, THanks everyone else for being there! Had a great time!

As HiJacker said, September 18th. This is our one year celebration. THere will be a cook out or something. WE will provide the food for free until it runs out. Get there early. We will start serving the food around 3:45pm until the Food is gone. There will be a few other activities there that day as well. Door prizes and such.

Sounds like the temp was a bit high. When this is the case the chicks hatch before the yolk sac is absorbed. Too much humidity and that causes what are called soft-bodied chicks in which the abdomen is enlarged and the yolk may not be totally absorbed.

That all said hatching eggs in an incubator is more of an art then a skill. What works for me will probably not work for you as the locations and weather all have a factor in this deal. My first hatch of the year is sometimes not so good as I have to tweak my methods and get everything just right again.

But don't let this scare you off from hatching either. It is great fun and watching a chick come out of the shell is still just as thrilling as the first time I saw it many years ago.

Along the way I have learned a lot too. Like to rotate eggs in the turner of a table-top model, if you don't the eggs under the heating element will devolop faster then the others do and be not so good when they hatch.

It is also easier to control humidity in a room rater then in a small space of an incubator.

And the most important lesson learned is to keep the breeders in top-notch health. High quality eggs make high quality babies.

Monty : Sorry about picking a place with no A/C, great to see you again and for taking the time to meet me at the Hospital I had a nice visit, just wish it was under better cicumstances.

Well I am headed to the lake in a little while for some family fun, yeah I know it's gonna be hot as all get out but hey if we stayed inside everytime it get's over 100 degrees we would never have any fun. Me personally I deal with it by sitting next to the cooler under a shade tree clasping my favorite ice cold Libation and being a wise A**

. The kids don't seem to mind the heat they are to busy having fun, we can learn from that. Have fun today Ya'll

So Peaches why did you raise prices at the concession stand all of a sudden, every time I bought a bottle of water it was $5.00, but after some further intense negociation I got the rpice reduced to only .75 cents what a deal

I asked Jeannie later for change for a 20 and she said she wasn't sure how to get into the Till, I laughed and told her we only call it a Till when your tryin to pocket some of it, we had a good laugh over that one, she needs to get out more....

With all of this in mind my problem must have been the humidity. My temp seemed okay to me really. I did not have a digital BUT every
time I looked it was about the same. My children are learning from me on how I handle this so I will try again, as I do not want to raise a
bunch of quitters. My girls have this faith in me like I know what to do. So I guess I will try again and that will be what I know and show them
to learn what they do not know. So I need to learn to control my humidity. Im using a hova-bator with turner. Did not move the eggs but now
I know on that. I had it in a room that I felt was free of drafts no fans nor any vents that was open. I will get out at some point and buy a better
temp and humidity reader to have ready. Maybe run some practice rounds and call 4h and see if we can keep the bator a bit longer. They will need
it back for the school system in spring I am guessing. Where do they get their eggs you think?

I hope you have a great time at the lake. Besure to tell everyone we said hello. Talked with Doc this morning. He says to tell everyone hello and that he misses everyone.
He also is asking about R&R dates.... Which is great, cause he gets to choose when he takes it. I told him christmas or Montanas Birthday. Dont know which one would be better

If they are bound for the table why cull them? As long as they are getting around ok and eating and drinking then I would let them be.

Looking in on them this morning, it seems alot of them have straightened out on their own. I only saw one with an obvious bent toe and a couple more with just a little bend. They seem to be getting around fine. Last night some of them had feet so twisted that they just kept flopping on their backs and kicking their legs. I was hating the thought of having to end anyone's suffering, so I am glad that it seems to be working itself out. I can tell my Tibetan roo was working overtime with the girls when these were laid. Last hatch was exactly 50/50 Pharoah and Tibetan, but these chicks are all tiny versions of him.
