Well, we made it back alive from Texas. Grayson got to spend a lot of "Daddy-time" with Bil and we all had fun visiting San Antonio. Seaworld was loads of fun, even if it did rain on us a little. They have an aviary full of Lorakeets (sp?) that you can walk into, as long as you bring in a cup of the nectar that they sell at the sea lion counter. The ladies that were running the aviary were amazed at how calm Grayson was when the birds started landing on his shoulders and walking across his back. We had to explain that he has loads of chickens and quail at home and loves them all. He especially liked it when one landed on my head and hung out there. They are definitely funny little birds and very possessive too. They looked like my two dogs arguing over a bone when it came to that little cup full of nectar.
I can't believe how fast our time there went and Bil and the rest of his unit will be leaving soon, so it was a very bittersweet goodbye last night. I know that he will be safe on his travels and come back safe and sound before I know it. In the meantime, we'll be keeping busy with the Great Quail Project and will be looking forward to a shipment of Buckeye chicks in the next month or so. Hoping to get some good stock out of both. My baby quail that were still fuzzy-headed when I left are now fully feathered and looking all grown up. I'll be quail-proofing their outdoor run today and will hopefully be able to release them out of their brooder area later today or early tomorrow.
Just walked outside and there was a hawk trying to git in the quails pen. On top of that my wife is picking on me because every time I walk outside that big turkey starts gobbling and struting around she said he is in love with me.
Is anyone looking for any replacement laying hens. I have quite a few that either just started laying or should be in the next few weeks. .ost of them are white rocks or barred rocks or mixes. I am just looking to make a bit of room.
