Okay, have a question, I just spent the better part of an hour herding 5 wk old chicks into the coop for the night. This was their first day outside (they loved it)

But they wouldn't go in when it started getting dark. I put the treat plate in to intice them but no, turned the light on, they would sit in the light beam on the ground outside, but not go in to the house. The others were calling them and they were interested, but wouldn't go in. So round and round I chased them trying to catch them to put them in one at a time. If I had just waited until goooooooooooooood and daaaaaaaaaaaaaark, would they have gone on their own? How long until they will go in on their own?

i usually get a little bread and make a crumb trail to get them going in the right direction- also i have heard to keep them locked in the coop for about a week till they get it clear that is home- i remember my first group i carried them back and forth for a few days till they caught on

sometimes it takes several days for them to find their way back into the coop on their own. I have found that if I wait until it is totalllllllllllly dark, they will "roost" on the ground and they are easier to pick up and put inside the coop.

Where are the early birds today! Cool rainy morning here in Tennessee. But thats ok I have some errands to do,a quilt to finish and have to spend some time with my new guniea pigs and pigeons! Another bright note, the favorite ee roo that I thought the hawk got showed up this weekend! So I guess it was just chased off by the neighbors taco dog1 ugggh! But I am sure happy to have him back.

at the moment... yes. I have done a few chickens but they are too small yet. I have done about 10 turkeys so far but would like to find a processer. DARP isn't interested in doing them so I guess I will do them myself.

Good morning all. I had a great time at the last Blanchard sale. I met some new folks and got reacquainted with others. It was good to be back among chicken people again. I can't wait for the next get-together.
