So I lost my beloved Sammie (Silver Duckwing - prior post #14) during the winter. I have no idea why or how, it remains a mystery. I found her in the coop but it appears she went peacefully. My heart broke. :hit TSC had OEG chicks in March so I picked up 6 although I could tell I was going to have issues (there is a TSC thread on here somewhere where we all lamented about the state of the new TSC brooders and how awful they were and all the chick deaths/illness). Out of 6 I had 3 survive. They are over 2 months now. I definitely have one hen which I think is another Silver Duckwing) but I am not entirely sure as she is much darker. There is definitely one roo which is turning into a Black Breasted Red (he's adorable but obnoxious right now) and then there is another Black Breasted Red....which right now...is going either way. :lau Some days I think I have a roo, other days I think I have a hen trying to be a roo. The roo (alpha roo?) is definitely combed, wattled, and feathered like a Black Breasted Red roo (and is actively crowing which is just great indoors!!!!) but the questionable roo (beta roo vs hen) is more monochromatic, has a really small comb and wattles, and occ "crows" when the other roo gets rolling. I can't tell if it's a mimicked crow or just being the beta roo. The behaviors are completely different too. I'm going to separate them all this weekend and see what happens. The hen and questionable one are going outside to the big girl coop. I'll see what happens with the one. My alpha roo will be spending at least another week inside until I get the two figured out. I already have a Silkie roo out there -3 roos will not work. I'll get some photos uploaded for everyone's opinion!

I voted other, because as of right now, I keep these

How many hens do you have in your coop?

I’m sorry about your hen. Did she get too cold?

They definitely both look like roosters to me. I’m sorry. Do you have pictures from when they were new? I’m curious on coloring!

I have OEGBs in a mixed flock and haven’t experienced any problems with them being aggressive towards humans or chickens or any other creatures. All mine are free range and I think that makes all the difference because they can get away from each other when pecking order drama happens. When they are cooped up and can’t get away from each other is when problems *might* be more likely to occur.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! My flock has lots of room to roam, so thinking they’ll all do great together.

Thank you @Lisanfloyd ! No, I don't think she died from cold stress (I had heaters going) or even too wet conditions (I had that happen one winter...birds came down with respiratory illness). I have a feeling she may have been egg bound and I didn't catch it. I did not have a necropsy done so I'll never know. No other hen died so it wasn't something contagious thank goodness!

I'll post some photos of the chicks...warning....one photo has 2 of the sick chicks who did not survive but it shows the one roo. All 5 chicks had identical coloring except the confirmed roo, who had a much lighter head.

This was also the first time I used an "open brooder" (dog kennel) with the heating plate and I must say it was great not having to constantly watch a heating lamp plus the chicks could look out and see everything which made for some very humorous moments with the family!

Ooooh, what variety, do you know? :pop

Confirmed roo to the left, questionable roo to the right.

So sorry you lost your hen! :hugs You have two gorgeous young men here! :love You can tell by the black chest; that's what the variety was named for. As you can see with your pullet, the girls are more brown on their front. They were cute chicks, too!
