Older Hen with Slow Crop: Slow Crop Treatment with Updates

Pick up something like thisView media item 7895288 to spray on her legs....I'm thinking she might have a case of scaly leg mites.

Yep! Already picked some up. I’m trying to focus on the more serious to her health issue (the crop) before I go insane on the mites thing. I have been applying vaseline every once in a while. Silly me, my house is old and very cold and I left the coconut oil spray where it’s cold. So the dang thing wouldn’t spray lol. Thank you!

So I was going to see if her crop was small this morning, but my fiancé - bless his heart - wanted to “help” me. I was up really late last night and early this morning doing some extra cramming before a chem test, so he gave her food and water before he went to work. Didn’t know til a few minutes had past and she’d already eaten and drank. So I guess I’ll find out tomorrow what her crop’s doing. Hope to make the crop bra tonight. I want to see how her baseline crop working is before I add any of the stool softener (which I picked up along with that pedialyte) or the crop bra. If you guys suggest otherwise lemme know.

Thank you again for all of this! I don’t think lil Bernie would be as good as she is now without you guys. Now she may not know about you, but she better be grateful!!! Also I took her in last night and gave her a small spa day. Didn’t bathe her just yet - I need to look into it - but I massaged her comb and gave her face a lil scratching and petting that she seemed to enjoy. My mom thinks she’s the sweetest thing. They thought this all was a little silly til last night when they saw her feeling the love!

Hey y’all! Gave lil miss Bernie a bath yesterday! And although she didn’t care too much for the actual bath, she LOVED! the drying lol. She’s a good bird. Even would let me blow dry her without touching her and she’d stay still.

So this morning her crop was down again!!! By a LOT! Upon further inspection though, there’s still a decent amount in there. I think it’s gone down about half way since having her vomit.

Also took some pictures of her poo, hoping that could help.

Her appetite is healthy! She ate the whole thing I gave her this morning and it was more on the soupy side. I mixed a capsule of stool softener like you recommended in there. She looks so good!!

Made her a crop bra out of this VetWrap/Ace bandage like material — it sticks to itself — athletes tape, and an old pair of not-too-stretchy jeans. There’s some stretch but not much. Also pinned it together with two safety pins. Made it like a racer back lol! It looks good; seems like a good fit for her. I don’t think it chokes her. It’s fairly snug on the upper part but not that snug. Snug on the lower part. I’m hoping it works!

Also how do I know if her crop is empty but still pendulous? Is it only pendulous if there’s stuff in there? Thanks guys! I threw in some pictures for you guys to look at

Bernie’s crop was even SMALLER this morning due to the crop bra. I made it a little more snug (it looked like it was almost a size too big up top) and removed the “racerback”. Seems to be working and doesn’t look like it’s choking her!!

Hoping it’s even better tomorrow morning. I’ll let you guys know

Well done on making the crop bra. It looks great but these things usually need a little tweaking to make them a perfect fit and since you are seeing daily improvement you are obviously getting it right. Thank you so much for documenting this so well as I am sure it will be of help and inspiration to others in the future facing a similarly daunting task of dealing with a slow/pendulous crop.

I haven’t been able to check her crop completely until today! And it seems....FLAT? I think it’s empty. It’s hard to tell with the excess skin, but I’m pretty sure it’s empty!!!! Guys!!! We did it! I think lol.

I’m gonna make the top a little tighter today to see if I can get it more flat.

In the mean time, when do I graduate her to more solid food? Like I said before, I plan on keeping her in a cage until a full week of empty-crop-mornings.
