Ditto - there is a reason the guides say wait Wait WAIT. Do not intervene until you understand what is happening inside and out in that egg. Also if your incubator was even slightly low, it can add a day or more to your hatch time.

There is also the risk of if you go in to intervene for one, you may shrink wrap another, depending on how quickly humidity recovers in your incubator.

Okay. I am waiting. The first one that pipped on the wrong end has FINALLY started trying to zip. It is very hard not to just get them out.

Okay. I am waiting. The first one that pipped on the wrong end has FINALLY started trying to zip. It is very hard not to just get them out.

Now I have a new problem. My hatcher thermostat is freaking out. It was up to 40c and I have to literally keep adjusting it. What do I do?

My experience is much less than the author, but I would say: later than you feel like you should. Give the wrong end pip 24hr. A wrong end pip is the internal and external pip all at once. Normally a chick would do one, rest 12hr or more, do the other and rest again, and then hatch.
Every time I think I might need to assist, it's usually too early.

I did and at 2 am I assisted the one that pipped at the wtong end. It had been trying for hours. I opened up the end with the air sac and put coconut oil on it and keft it to see if it could get out the rest of the way. Slept for an hour and when I checked the legs were out but not the head. All of the blood vessels were dried up so I pulled the egg apart and out it popped. The unpipped egg was dead in the shell. So I have a 50 percent hatch rate. Poor chickies. But I will have more batches coming along in a week. I have certainly learned a lot. Thanks for all the help.

Are you counting the broken one? If so, you shouldn't since it was compromised. It sounds like if you take that out of the mix you had 66% which is darn good considering one was malpositioned.

Well, thank you. That makes me feel a little better. My malpositioned chick is limping on its right leg. I literally went to sleep for an hour and when I woke up it had both legs sticking out of the shell but its little head was stuck. I helped it get the shell off of its head and its leg ends up over the top of its little winglet when it tries to sit down. I have it confined to a small box so that the day old chick stops picking on it. I was thinking that it was just because it is just hatched but when it tried to stand up it tried to use the leg it peeped very loudly. It appeared to be painful. It shakes when it is trying to use it or readjust its position. Is there anything else I should be doing besides confining? This poor little chickie has had a rough start.

Your chick might have spadle or splayed leg. You might have to splint it. Lots of information on the net on how to do it. I had a malposition chick in my last batch like your one, pipped wrong. It also had only one leg out sideway. Sadly my one didn't get better and died a couple of day later. Hopefully your chicks leg sorts itself out
