I had the same thing happen with my pups, but it was about 4 hours after their 2nd puppy shot so we had to take them to the emergency clinic as it was 9:30 pm. And of course they didn't do it at the same time. One waited until we got back from taking her sister and then we had to turn and take her. That was a 500.00 night. And all they did was give them Benadryl and keep them for observation over night.

They tell me it is fairly common and that it is usually the leptospirosis that they react to. We also did the benadryl before the next shot, but I had them skip the lepto part of the vaccine and they were fine. It might have been the benadryl, but I doubt it. The spay was not a concern because there is no vaccine given at that time. I think maybe your vet is being over cautious. IMO

I've been following this thread, but haven't posted since I have no helpful information to share. Sounds like she's coming along well! I can't wait to see the new pictures.

Hi there
This is my first post. I usually just read posts, but, I guess I'd like to add my 2cents to this! I'm a retired nurse that worked in a Burn Unit.
After looking at these pictures, it looks to me almost like burns and to treat burns, you have to get rid of the dead tissue in order for the good viable tissue to grow. That could include scrubbing or peeling or cutting the dead tissue to allow the good to grow.

That said, it sounds like the daily medicated baths, and removing the old tissue is spot on!Congrats to you and what you're doing for your chick! She will look worse before getting better. Just part of the process! You just have to make sure that she doesn't get a secondary infection with all the open areas. I think you said that you are giving her antibiotic in her water, right? Good!

Best of luck with her. Please keep us updated on how its going!

Excellent observation, 4honey! That was my first thought when I looked at the pictures this am. Good advice too. Great job taking care of your girl Dar!

funny you say that... i said to my husband that it looks like she was on the BBQ but she didn't even make it outside so i know it can be a burn

Hey, I just read this and it sounds like I think that it's a burn......what I meant was it looks like a burn and as such I'd treat it as one. It kind of looks like some type of trauma to me. What the cause was is anybodys guess. (my pearls, for what it's worth)!

DAr, I would use Dawn dish soap when you finally want to get the greaSE OF HER FEATHERS. aFTER ALL, THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE USING ON THE POOR BIRDS IN THE GULF SPILL AND IT IS SAFE FOR THE BIRD. i HOPE SHE GETS BETTER. i ALSO HAVE DEALT WOTH SICK CHICKENS, WHILE i LOVE MY BIRDS, i DO UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS HARD TO DECIDE AT WHAT COST..oops, hit the caps key, sorry. As I was saying, it is hard to come up with money to treat our 4 legged pets and fortunately, this forum is extremely helpful with treatments for chickens. As long as she seems to be improving, I think you are doing the right thing, It just upsets me that some people posted they would not ever pay to vet a chicken, yet if a coon or other predator killed the bird they would be up in arms. If people cannot deem vetting their pets, and I am referencing our indoor pets, then they should not have pets, or other animals, but at least you are doing as you can, and I would be doing the same...let us know. After all, it is US that choose to own THEM, so we are responsible for a certain level of care, and if at all financially possible, for the best care we can give. One more thing, just keep an eye on your other birds that they do not catch it if it is contagious.
