How are we ever going to get through summer when it is only June and already 90 plus every day? I keep getting migraines , but I can't just stay inside all day , the animals need tending to and I have work to do. I moved feeding time from 3 pm to 7 pm, it was a bit better. No rain in sight , just hot. Already had one chicken die from the heat despite having water and shade. :'( I miss the pool we had in Florida . What can we do to keep everyone cool?

I can't say that I've ever had a chicken die from the heat, but most all of mine free range. If I get this stupid building done, that might change next year.

If I were you, I would move feeding time from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m......much cooler in the morning than in the evening...at least it is here. It seems to wait until the sun is completely set before starting to cool off.

As for what you can do? Fans...ice in the waters....water misters....make sure they have plenty of dust/sand/dirt for bathing....other than bringing them in the A/C there's not much more you can do.

7 am? You have got to be kidding. I am not even conscious at that hour. I do the chickens twice, but the goats get their pellets in the afternoon/ evening. I was letting a lot of the chickens free range, but the hawks started taking them. Guess I need to start with giving out ice in the waterers. And hook up more fans. DH will never go for chickens inside with the ac. He wasn't happy about chicks in my bathtub all winter.

My silkies have a fan

Otherwise I just go out in AM - around 8 or so, and check all water - ducks usually need topping off & most times at least one chicken pen has an overturned waterer, and give treats.
Afernoons, around 1 or 2, if I can, I go out and check waterers again and refill duck pools if needed.
I go out at 7pm and feed and refill waterers. My feed for most of my birds is corn based - I get it at a local grain mill. They love it, so prefer not to change it. My silkie feed isn't corn based, but just feed them when I feed everyone else.

I took some watermelon out to mine arund noon today. That darn snake tried to get another egg today from the other side of the coop. I found the egg on the floor with a chip out of the egg. There are 4 hens sitting on 12 eggs. I guess they must have managed to scare it away before it got to devour it's meal. I plugged in the other bator and plan to put the remaining 11 eggs in it. They go on lock down soon anyway. I took the 2 eggs from the black hen to avoid loosing them to the hungry snake. We're gonna get some of that king snake scent stuff to put out around the coop to keep the theives away. I hope it works.

The last 5 GG bob white eggs where no good and the other jap bantam egg too. So I got 1 jap bantam chick. I'm gonna have to get some more eggs in hopes of getting at least a pair. I wish that person that owes me the JB cortunix eggs would send them. I checked yesterday and that person hasn't logged in BYC since may 22nd so who knows. I really doubt i'll get them.

The swap went well for me this spring. Only 1 person didn't send and I managed to get all my eggs out. I'm looking for more jap bantam, JB cortunix, RN pheasant and of course silkie eggs, white bearded preferably. I need to get a few more white hens. I'm waiting to see what the sex are of the chicks I have now. I have 1 blue splash, 1 lav splash, 1 blue and 2 black girls and a black and a blue boy for my bbs side and 2 hens and a roo for the white side, 3 hens and a roo for my partridge side. I'll work on getting some buffs as soon as I get the bbs and white's squared away the way I want them. My sizzles are mixed colors with a calico roo. I have 3 white, 2 blue, 1 black and 1 gray girls with the calico roo. I plan to put the blue cockereal with the blue sizzle pullets when I get another pen built. DH is busy working and don't have time right now. They aren't laying so no biggie anyway.
