online Crazy Egg Chain Chat thread

Only thing is I think it all depends on the ppl you get. Like our little PO here. They know us by name and they always take really good care of my eggs. While on the other hand my UPS Driver is so-so. He has been prone to throwing packages over my fence because he didnt want to open the gate. One day he hung/tied a package to our electric fence. We havent figured out why he did that but I am sure it did not feel good! He tosses them on the top of my jeep sometimes---so he doesnt have to walk to the door. Normally I am home so its not an issue but he does not take as much care as my mail lady does but then again she is great!!

As far as packages being destroyed, I had some metal trays that I ordered that UPS managed to destroy. They were all bent up and messed up. I had no problems getting them replaced though. I am not sure who ate the cost for replacing them whether it was UPS or the company I bought them from.

So I guess it just depends on who the person is handling your stuff what kind of shape it is in when you get it.

I mark all my boxes as live hatching eggs, and most all the people that get eggs from me have great hatches. Most times, if they don't it's something they did, not the P.O.

It's not the PO's that cause the problems, it's the distribution centers. If I receive a box labeled hatching eggs I can almost guarantee that it will be smashed. If labeled "fragile" there would be a 50/50 chance of it getting here intact. If it's not marked it will be in perfect condition. One of the most important box of eggs I was waiting on earlier this year looked like someone stepped right in the middle of the box. It was marked fragile and hatching eggs on all sides. When I opened the box all the eggs in the center were broken, but everything on the outside was intact.

Perfect foot pattern. I was more than a little Po'd. Now the only time I have a damaged box is when I forget to mention to someone, or during a swap when I don't know who is sending me eggs. The last box looked like someone had kicked in the side.

On the other had my PO is great. They always bring the boxes to the house. She will place them in the garage if the door is open, if not they go on the porch out of the sun.

I'm going to have a talk with my regular post mistress today. They have a new post mistress who works on the days our regular one is off. My husband shipped a box of eggs for me last week and he said the new post mistress slammed the box on the scale. When he told her those are eggs, she replied that as long as you packaged them well they should be fine. I'm sorry, that to me means she think she can be as rough as she wants with the I packages ship.

Our regular post mistress will not let her carriers transport the eggs in their hot cars to my house. She either calls me, or sends a notice, so that I can make the 3 mile drive to pick up eggs shipped to me. She keeps my eggs that are sent to me in the air conditioned office

She has NEVER slammed down or dropped onto the scale any of my eggs I've shipped out.

The eggs that my husband shipped were in terrible shape when they arrived to their destination.

A bunch were broken. I feel terrible.

But I'm still going to let my regular post mistress know that I'm unhappy with how the other postal worker handled my package. That was just uncalled for.

I'll stick with USPS. I have shipped and received lots of eggs, and the only times I've had broken eggs, is when the packaging was insufficient. I had one box arrive that was a bit smashed up, but the eggs inside were fine because the shipper had packed them very securely. But, I have also received eggs that the box was perfect, yet the eggs were mostly broken, which was due to poor packaging. I think you'll find problems with any method of shipping, but overall, I've had great luck with the P.O. To me, the key is to package eggs to withstand rough handling.

But no matter how well the eggs are packaged, if they are thrown around, even if the egg stays intact, the impact of the stop sends the yolk slamming into the side of the egg (inertia). This gives you broken yokes and ruptured and enlarged air cells.

Well, I know from experience that I have a higher percentage of boxes where the eggs are all loose inside and usually don't hatch as well from the boxes that are marked. The boxes that I get that aren't marked don't seem to be in as bad a shape and generally hatch better. But it just might be going through my PO, or the PO in Denver. I heard of one postmaster saying that there are people in the PO that are sorters,or at least I gather, maybe deliverers too, that like to shake up the fragile packages to see if they can hear them break. I really don't know for certain though.

Yes, exactly. I get lots of boxes where the eggs were packaged perfectly, but if they were marked fragile or eggs the insides are all loose and bubbly when candled. I really think that there is one of those evil little destructo people at the Denver distribution center

I now let my customers decide if I mark the box...But if it was up to me, I wouldn't mark my boxes at all. The local PO is good with my eggs, but somewhere along the line is an evil postal worker or warehouse worker who is angry about his lot in life and thinks it is funny to destroy live embryos. I have tried it both ways, marked & unmarked, and a sig. number of marked packages have shown up badly cruched and damaged, but none of the unmarked boxes has been damaged so far.

My PO is real good too.
But on to another question? Do you send your DC#'s to your customers? I use to send them to everyone, I get them sent to me once in a while.
But doesn't paypal send a notice to the folks if that is where you print your labels? That's what I have been thinking but just in case.

But you will have those same kind of workers at a UPS Distribution center as well. I know here our UPS man does not get to our end of his route until at least 6-7 pm. So that would leave my eggs on the truck all day. They are also bad about (if they are running behind) waiting until the next day. I am Lucky and my mailman does chickens too. So he is great with my eggs. Also the closest ups drop off center is an hour away. I would have to charge more for shipping to cover my gas. I have been shipping eggs for over a year and only ever had to replace a few in 1 order in all this time.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in the whole UPS vs USPS situation. I personally will stick with USPS at this time anyway
