Mopargirl - australorps complete!! 5 of 6 hatched fine. First one to pip began zipping then died in shell sometime while we were gone for a few hours. Not sure what happened to him:/ Thanks for them though!!

my chicks hatched

2 silver penciled plymoth rock bantams and 2 bantam OEG. These eggs were from Peeps inc. I'm very pleased with them. I am interested to see what color the OEG will be. They look grey right now, one is light grey and the other is darker. I'll try to post some pictures later. The silver penciled are already pretty!

I am really thinking about starting to ship chicks. I am thinking Cutler has the best prices on the boxes. So....What is the best way to ship. I talked to the the PO and they said it it. aound 35.00 for overnight shipping, is this the best way to ship or can I ship Priority Mail 2-3 days. If I can do Prioriety how much does it cost for chicks or is it the same as anything else by weight? I do not know so I am hoping someone on here can tell me.........

I do not my truck comes at 5:30 at night and they told me it would be delivered the next day around or before 5. Also, what do I need to put on the box. I have read the USPS rules and it say within 24 hours of hatch, but when shipping a large chicken it is over 24 hours so how does that work? Some of my chicks, I have been asked about are around 4-14 weeks old. Someof the silkies are 2 days to 2 weeks old. Can I ship these? I know lots of question but I am on a learning curve here.

i have been thinking about shipping chicks as well. when i talked with the post office they told me that it had to be express which costs more but you still get the same delivery time as priority , go figure lol .... and when i had grown birds shipped it took the full three days , and when you order chicks from hatcheries it takes the 2 to 3 days then as well , i honestly dont know if the post office actual has OVERNIGHT shipping lol .... but they advertise it .....

but hey if you can find anymore out about it let me know , im still looking into all the ins and outs on it as well , also on the shipping across the canadian border i have heard from several people that you dont have any issues as long as you have all of your paperwork there and present , and as far as paperwork i was told npip papers and there were two more i believe

ETA: If you are not shipping day-old (less than 24 hours) each bird has to weigh at least 6 ounces. I don't know how people manage to ship adult button quail, because they never reach 6 ounces!

This would work for any adult (over 6 ounce) birds, you'd just have to adjust for size. Check with other people that have shipped birds to see just how much food (apples, tomatoes, melons) you'd have to put in the box to make sure they'd have enough to eat for the trip.

So when they told me it was like 35.00 to ship overnight, that is not true? Or, do I just put the little guys in a box and weight the box and ship the Priority mail? I am not sure what ages I will be shipping so I have to find out the anwser for both. I would think the overnight is need for large adult birds, but not for chicks under 12 weeks or so or is it anything over 24 hrs is consideres adult by their terms

I am so confused. I want to try this I just do nto want the poor guys DOA.....
