The trades are for 6, there isn't supposed to be a '+'. I usually send 7 or 8 depending on how many I have, most of my breeds are low in numbers. But if I have only 6 eggs and a swap to go out, that's what they get. If they aren't happy with it then they could just buy them when I get a 'good day' and list 9+ or 12+.

This has been my worst year ever for shipped eggs.

I tossed 16 earlier today........two were rotten & all the others were either completely scrambled or severely detached air cells. A lot more earlier quitters than usual too -those seem to be the ones that go bad- and I don't candle until day 18 - so by then some are ROTTEN!!!!!!!!

My best development on shipped eggs so far, is showing to be ducks, turkeys & guineas. Not sure how they will be doing come hatch day though!

Ducks and guineas handle shipping a lot better than most other species. Idk about turkeys, I never have very good luck with those.

I got more guinea then any of the other breeds I got from the swap thread. They had trouble hatching though. The shells where so hard they couldn't do anything but put a big crack in them. A few where able to get out but I helped most.

Oh and a lady and her son stopped by and asked if they could see my chickens. They said they saw them on their walks but wanted to see them close up and told me they found a huge nest across the street. I know where my guinea hen was laying now but it's too late. She's been dead for a month now. She got killed in the storms. I wish I had knows about the nest alot sooner. I was looking out in the woods behind the house not across the street in a field with no shelter.

Dear Seller, I am very disappointed in the quality of the eggs you sent. I understand the broken one is due to the PO rough handling, even though it contaminated two other eggs. I do have a problem with the ones that did arrive undamaged. Four of those were misshappen, and I do not set misshappen eggs due to lack of hatchability. I am not sure if the thin shells on them were due to the odd shapes, or a lack of oyster shells in their diet, but I expected eggs that I could incubate especially considering the price & breed of these eggs. Even though the auction was for 10, and you sent 12, I can only incubate 5 of those. (12 minus 1 broken minus 2 contaminated minus 4 misshappen) .. I would like to know if you are willing to work with me on this in regards to making this problem with the product itself right. I really would like to add this wonderful breed to my flock, and was looking forward to hatchable eggs. ..BlahBlah

If you get an attitude or no response whatever, after three days or something, I would open claim with ebay and or paypal. It is not a shipping issue when it is the eggs themselves.

So you mean you seriously won't even try to incubate the ones that were 'contaminated' (wipe them off for pete's sake!) or the 'misshapen' eggs (they could still hatch)...I find this very hard to believe. Personally, I set ALL eggs. The way I see it, if I don't set them then they surely won't hatch; if I set them then they might.

Have you ever hatched guineas before? Their shells are ALWAYS hard. Their 'pips' are nothing but a huge crack. Eventually they bust out the rest of the egg and hatch, but it's normal for guinea eggs to 'crack' instead of pip.

Despite calcium I have a couple silkies that lay an occasional funny egg- usually when they are coming back from being broody. I hatch these with no problem. If it were an egglayer type of bird, I might cull for this, but in silkies? Well, as long as they are healthy and will lay, I don't mind an occasional bump or small ripple. Would I send that egg? Probably not. Now, I have gotten eggs with very porous/thin shells. These have also hatched. Did their hens need some oyster shell? Probably.

usually I set all eggs however after my last experience I will reconsider. I received some eggs in an auction on byc ( not a swap) several were misshapen. one of these appeared to have a rather thin spot. I put it in the incubator in the top tray of the Dickey. two days later it burst open and dripped all over the lower trays. and on chicks I had hatching. it was really nasty. out of 12 eggs only one is developing.

I, too, have received misshapen and dirty eggs. I set them.

I do consider them when I set them and rearrange my Sportsman so the worse ones are on bottom in case anything should happen. I do not hatch in my Sportsman so I have no problem with chicks underneath. I keep a tray down for spilled water or the occasional drippy egg.

Having said that, I have had wonderful hatches from dirty eggs. The last one of shipped dirty eggs was a 100% hatch so I find it odd when folks feel the need to wash eggs. And in the past I have had plenty of misshapen eggs to hatch. Not the torpedo ones but flat sided or extremely round eggs.

I sent eggs to a lady (and funny that it has only been one person) and she was extremely upset with getting dirt smeared eggs. She said she had to wash them before setting them and figured none would hatch. How crazy! I set the same dirt smeared eggs at the same time and got a great hatch. I always try to set some eggs from the same pen to make sure of hatchability, though I know the PO can be a cause. All I can say is her loss because I get much worse sent to me and get good hatches and great chicks.
Really, how dirty are hens anyhow? Some of my broody hens have gotten the eggs gross from being out in the rain and mud. They don't know how to wipe their feet, for petes sake! I have chicks everywhere from plenty of "dirty" eggs.

Sorry! Off my soap box now!

DH's eggs are extremely clean. And those hens are pastured! A few times he will get one with a little poop on it but it just wipes right off. Mine are all dirty if it is rainy. Seems everyone likes laying in mud

He does have one hen that lays misshappen eggs. She also limps. We think a goat may have stepped on her, and we have never gotten her eggs to hatch.
Also one of our BSLs has started laying pullet bullets about once a week. I stuck one on the bator the other day, will see how that goes.
He has also gotten a soft-shelled egg before, and those birds don't need calcium.

I don't mind dirty eggs. Have quite a few set now......
