online Crazy Egg Chain Chat thread

I had a splash silkie pullet come up missing last year. No feathers or any sign of anything. Just vanished. I suppose a hawk swooped down and carried her off while I was inside. Other than that, we haven't had any losses due to predators.

Hawks usually leave a pile of feathers, yours was probably some four-legged predator. I had some disappear last year (maybe the year before?) with no signs of a struggle. However, we also lost a LGD pup at the same time so I think we had some coyotes come into the yard since the 'grass' was 6' tall in most parts.

That's likely since we have coyote around here. This year a bobcat was spotted at night in the yard by the coop. I haven't had any problems with anything tring to get into the coop or pens.

Ok Wolf- I hate to tell you this, and on an open forum too, but I am so disgusted with the eggs I got from you. Of the 9 I set only 6 of them are developing. I demand that you ship some more of these wonderful...umm horrible eggs to me.

Only 6? Really. That sucks!

BTW I put eggs in lockdown yesterday. Had tirned off my hatcher for the first time in over a year. Should have started it up sooner, cause the temp was low and I adjusted it. Out of 17 I had 15 make lockdown. Went in to check humidity just a few minutes ago and the temp was up to 108. I didn't see any movement when I checked it. Think I fried all my babies. They aren't due till saturday, so I'm going to just leave them in there for now. Have to add more for the 23rd, but I'm staying up to watch the temps tonight.

If the air cells are seriously misshapen you might want to run your humidity a little on the high side during incubation, at least 45%. I know I read you normally dry hatch (at least I think that was you), but 'wet' hatching some of the more messed up ones might help.

I am trying laying them on the side with the biggest part of the cell at the top. I should get some pics of these things. One was going down half of one side of the egg, last week.

I will definately try with the humidity higher on next shipped ones that are like that. I have learned that right now, those screwy air cells are causing early death & hatching problems.

Dear Seller, I am very disappointed in the quality of the eggs you sent. I understand the broken one is due to the PO rough handling, even though it contaminated two other eggs. I do have a problem with the ones that did arrive undamaged. Four of those were misshappen, and I do not set misshappen eggs due to lack of hatchability. I am not sure if the thin shells on them were due to the odd shapes, or a lack of oyster shells in their diet, but I expected eggs that I could incubate especially considering the price & breed of these eggs. Even though the auction was for 10, and you sent 12, I can only incubate 5 of those. (12 minus 1 broken minus 2 contaminated minus 4 misshappen) .. I would like to know if you are willing to work with me on this in regards to making this problem with the product itself right. I really would like to add this wonderful breed to my flock, and was looking forward to hatchable eggs. ..BlahBlah

If you get an attitude or no response whatever, after three days or something, I would open claim with ebay and or paypal. It is not a shipping issue when it is the eggs themselves.

Just a little input on Ebay and Paypal policy for my experience . . . . you can file a complaint but its up to the seller to issue the refund. Paypal will automatically refund your money if you show proof that you returned the item with a tracking number and it was delivered back to the seller. I know thats hard to do with eggs and paypal just don't grasp that. Shipped eggs fall under that buyer beware risk. We're all at risk on both sides of the fence.

Thanks for all of your input and PM's guys! I would have responded sooner but it stopped raining which means no BYC time for me unless I sneak! Anyhow, I will contact the seller today. I did set the eggs in my octa-magiggy (for easy cleaning)... I just really don't want the mess of busted egg(s). The shell on the one is just soo thin. As for dirty eggs (which these were not) I really don't mind. I set all of my dirty eggs here and send all of the cleanest ones to buyers/swaps. I just had 14/15 hatch on dirty eggs
