It is bad here in TN. I have been going through Ice chips like crazy most of my coops are in the shade, but several of them are not. I keep ice in the ones that are in the sun. Silkies are bad in TN summers that is the only time I ever lose silkies is during the summer. I lost 2 last year and 1 the year before and their coop is in the shade. I have been giving them ice chips this year and so far so good. I haven't lost one yet. I am keeping my fingers cross.

I haven't lost any so far to the heat. I took the eggs from the broody's and I take them off the nest everytime I go out because they just pile up on each other and it has to be way too hot for them. I do the ice water bottle thing too. I wish I hadn't complained about it staying cool so late in the season when it should have been warmer. Well........it's warmer alright.

I spent thw worst part of the winter in northern Indiana and shoved more snow than I car to remember. I was so anxious for warm weather I had forgotten to be patient.

Not yet, it's the 18th. Not many are 'chatting' on the thread so I don't know who all's gonna be there. I know a few locals will but looks like that might be it. I think I'm gonna change the food rules to 'bring your own' so I don't get stuck buying a whole ton of extra.

The 18th at my house, the link is in my siggy. We are about 1 hour west of Somerset or 1 1/2 east of Bowling Green if you know where either of those are.

Busy night tonight. I go out to close up birds/get eggs and I can't find my OEGB hen, Nugget, and her chicks
sad.png
Her chicks are not big enough to get into the rafters and she is not in the cage where she usually sleeps. I looked outside around the barn (found my cochin hen, Essie, with her brood behind the barn last night) but couldn't find Nugget anywhere. Hopefully that just means she's hidden herself real well

The coyotes were real close tonight, I don't think I've ever heard them so close. I hope the neighbor's birds/dogs are okay since the 'yotes sounded like they were in his front yard.

I lost my only 'pure' game rooster today
sad.png
He was the only Charlie baby I had left

He'd not been doing well lately, not quite sure what his problem was. His comb had started to flop over instead of standing upright. When I found him his comb and wattles were pretty much purple. I guess that means his heart?

So looks like I will be selling my game hens after all...no sense keeping them if I have no boy to put with them. Sure, I have Sugar, who is technically 'pure' game, but he is part LF AG and part bantam OEG, so not exactly 'pure'. Plus he's ugly and everyone always thinks he's a girl until he crows

To top it all off, one of my Marans hens is broody, so there goes the last pen of 'sellable breed' eggs...can't do much with only 2 hens...What a day

I know what you mean. Because it is so darned hot, I have been letting some of the chickens out during the day. Night before last I went to put up the buff orp hens and roo, but one hen was not in yet. I shut up the coop and went searching. This hen is always the last one in at night, and sometimes she just hangs out under the big yard lamp in the back to eat bugs. I searched and searched , even got a flashlight and looked in the woods. Nothing. Have not seen her since. I am thinking the fox got her. The day I went to buy the latest incubator, I saw a fox cross the road in broad daylight(in MS). At least here I only see them at night.
Has anyone else noticed that bugs are taking over the world? I am seriously sick of getting bitten by them. I practically bathe in insect repellent. I am beginning to think they view it as sauce for the banquet. Last year I got so chewed up I went to the doctor. If it is not ticks, it is chiggers , or else mosquitos or those horrible biting flies. Even indoors you are not safe, ants get in, fruit flies, whatever. Anyone got some solutions ? I have tried zappers, fly strips, repellents, bluebirds, and golden malrin bait.
Try to stay cool;-)
