There's nothing wrong or should be considered disgusting or 'low-class' about eating wild game, including 'possum. Those of us who do eat most any kind of wild game we want, are those who will, can, have and often do, survive in hard times. If a nuclear war hit tomorrow, and half the population in the USA survived the initial blasts and radiation, half of those left alive would eventually starve to death because they haven't a clue about how to live a symbiotic life with the natural environment.

I myself am born and raised southern, and I'm very proud to say 'possum has passed my lips and will again when the situation arises should I need or want it to.

I'm afraid you've misunderstood me, or maybe I just phrased my statement wrong.

I eat my share of wild game, kill it and prepare it myself, so the thought of it being "low class" or even "redneck" never entered my mind.

It's more a matter of prefference, like someone liking chocolate versus vanilla.

I'd preffer venison over rat meat, but if only rats were available, you can bet I'd eat them, and possum has to be far above eating rat.

I'm southern born & bred too, and proud of it.
So please don't take my statement the wrong way.

Dang - Rooster Red, that first picture of that opossum! He sure was scarry looking, (and kinda ugly) He looked ticked and scary! Those teeth looked like my pomeranian's - in need of a little brushing.

So if you put cat food outside they will not bother your chickens? 3 days ago my dog caught one and the poor possum was too small. It Died. I guess it was too much stress being caught by a dog then bathed, dried with my hair drier and then I put some antibiotic ointment on its tail because my dog injured it on it's tail.

I feel so bad... the poor possum was hungry I assume, it was looking for food, but I do not want the possums to eat my chickens. My chickens have a shed but they are free range and sleep in a tree. Do you think that a possum can climb the tree and get my chickens?

A possum can definatley climb to get your chickens, and so can coons. It would be for the best if you put then in an enclosed run and in a coop over night. My run is fenced using scrap materials from off of craigslist.com, and stuff local people were throwing away.

My theory about feeding the possums is that if I give them an easy to get food source that they'll eat it and not be as tempted to try to get my chickens.

This has been working well for me.

Oh, he was ticked!
Hissing and growling, me growling right back at him kind of bruised his possum ego I think.

His teeth are way sharper than your pom's are.

He weighed about what my bigger cats weigh, around 12 lbs.

I've never seen one that big before or since.

Last evening on television there was a show that was filmed in Louisiana and they were cooking and eating what looked like a giant rat (I can't remember what they called it, sorry) When it was all skinned and cut up it looked like something pretty ordinary (not like a rat). My father in law won't tell me what I'm eating till after I have tried it, as he is asian and they eat some really strange things! There isn't much I won't try, at least once.

was it a neutra rat?

Red what are you doing picking that thing up didn't it try to fight, I would figure you grab it by the neck and its nails would be doing some scratching. definately never tried to pick one up knowing it was live, picked one up(with gloves on) after the dog tore into it. tossed it out of the driveway then went to put it in trach can and it was gone so i guess it was just playing POSSUM and fooled me good, because both dogs had been in the house with me so I assume it ran away.

Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman, perhaps? That guy just creeps me out...DH loves the show of course.

You have to pick it up at just the right spot.
Thumb & forefinger just behind the jaw hinge so it can't turn its head. You have to be really fast and have good aim.
Then pull its tail out straight and pick it up, its claws can't reach you.

WARNING: Don't try this at home kiddies.
