ORGANIC CHICKEN FEED

What is considered organic? I buy layer feed from the Amish, They make it themselves. Would that be considered Organic? I will grab one of the tags with ingredients on it tonight.

organic just means you dont use any manmade chemicals on what you grow which includes antibiotics in livestock as well. the only time i ever use antibiotics is when i have an injured bird like a few weeks ago when a sneaky rat bit one of my pullets and her tail became enflamed.

Their is a whole range that can be considered "more organic" than commercial grade feed.

Certified organic must follow ridged guidelines: Seeds must be certified organic grown on fields that did not have chem's on them for 3 or more years! The seeds can not be GMO! Feeds that are certified organic can not have mammal byproducts in them.. Google Certified organic to learn more.

The Amish feed may be close to the certified organic but without certification. Ask them what their practices are.

Thank you for the great info, That is what I figured.

Hey if you're in North Florida... Where I live in Gainesville Florida a local pet/livestock supply store called Earth Pets sells all sorts of organic products including Countryside Natural Products - Organic Soy-free Chicken Feed (non-medicated).

They also sell granite grit! I couldn't find grit anywhere at all and I asked them about it - sure enough they ordered it for me and have kept it stocked since then.

They're really great if you're in North FL - I think the feed is selling for 95 cents a pound.

I second the "earth pets organics" location... I live in Ocala, FL about 45 minutes south of Gainesville... The only way I can beat Earth Pets is to order 45 or more 50-lb bags from their supplier in VA... I can't use that much feed before it spoils...

so, I buy from them.

I would love to find organic feed for less $$$, but until I do... Earth Pets Organics will continue to be my source of Organic Chicken feed...

I can not find an organic feed in my area I do go to a large town once every other month, so looking there. I would rather feed an all natural diet with no GMO then worry about organic but that is me. So I am still on the look out for a great feed that won't break my check book.

Just because it is Amish does not mean it is organic. Several years ago I took my chickens to an Amish processor located in Arthur, IL. Arthur is a well known Amish community. On my way to the processor, I was surprised to see one of the Amish farmers on a big John Deer tractor. I asked Andy, the owner of the processing facility who was also Amish, about this. I thought Amish did not believe in using equipment and always assumed they used plows and did everything organically and the old way. Andy laughed and said, no they did everything just like everybody else, they use chemicals and tractors, etc. He said he only knew one person in the community who was growing organically and his fields were a mess. My view of the Amish changed at that point and I have since learned that they look at animals and functional and cash only as well. They are famous for puppy mills too. I am willing to bet that those fields he was working in that day were GMO, but I did not think to ask. During my visits, I began noticing chicken farms where the chickens did not even see the outside. I am not saying all Amish use these practices, but just because it is Amish, do not assume it is pesticide free or organic.

It expensive to get chicken feed shipped.
Some things to look at:
Nutrena Nature Smart Organic (~1.93 USD per pound): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06X167FKR/?tag=backy-20
Scratch and Peck Feeds - Amazon: (~1.52 USD per pound): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0068SP1XE/?tag=backy-20
Scratch and Peck Feeds - Chewy (~1.51 USD per pound): https://www.chewy.com/scratch-peck-feeds-naturally-free/dp/159796
Kalmbach Chicken Feed (~1 USD per pound): https://www.chewy.com/kalmbach-organic-harvest-omegga-layer/dp/170375

Most of these brands also have chicken starter/grower as well.

Note: I get my feed from a local pet store and haven't tried getting it from these sources.
Purely based on what others have told me.

What I currently use (~0.70 per pound): https://www.nutrenaworld.com/product/nature-smart-layer-pellet-feed
