Oriental Gamefowl Thread!

By the way, (I posted this info on uff several days ago)

A friend of mine that is a vet with the USDA is opening a Quarantine Hatchery this winter. He is receiving from Germany:

Satsumadori, Onagadori, Ohiki, Minohiki and some other nice things too.

Toni-Marie already has some of these as well.

So, are you saying that IDEAL probably has ruined their stock since receiving it from Glenn? Wanda (Mice75) told me she heard that IDEAL was considering doping their Kraienkoppes with Malays and OEGs. Bad thing to do, especially if they're doping the Kraiens with their own Malays, which are far from what Malays should be.
What do you mean by Quarantine Hatchery? I would love to hear more about this because I am very eager to get some good quality birds.

Ideal is trying to run a profitable hatchery: that cannot be done with Orientals without charging higher prices for those chicks which they don't do. Enough said.

Quarantine hatchery:

At present it is illegal to bring in eggs or adult stock into the USA from anywhere without them going thru a quarantine which is very expensive: hence the high prices some charge for their new imports. Things are like they use to be.

There is paperwork to do, fees to pay, approval to seek, blood test and the like.

A Quarantine hatchery would do those things for you. You line up the eggs to be shipped to them not you (illegal!). They hatch the chicks and then do the blood work at either 3 or 6 weeks if passed then you get the chicks. This is MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE than shipping adult stock and paying for their quarantine time.

My friend knows the hurdles and, of course, will have to make a profit, but it will still be less expensive than importation of adult birds.

I truly hope it will be a great success for him and will bring in new genetics for all of us.
If successful it will put an end to these high priced imports we see now. Their businesses will have to adjust or fail. I'm in no way against folks making money and I completely understand that those importing today must recoop their investment. This will just make it easier for any of us to do the importation. There will still be a cost: you can bet on that but a much more affordable cost.

That sounds like a good system! I'm all for good birds at a more affordable price. So, what you're saying is that I pay for shipment of eggs and chicks, and they pay for all of the other things like bloodwork? I really like the sound of that, but I would need some sort of price range before I seriously consider it. If it is a good enough prospect, I can save up the money for it. I'm willing to wait a year or more in order to get good stock

Do you have any idea how much, say, 15-20 chicks would cost?

I would think the best thing to do is get a pool of breeders together to split the cost of bringing in birds of a certain breed through this quarentine hatchery. While it may extend the time at which you receive stock to work with, would make it even more affordable as well as make it easier to bring in a larger supply of hatching eggs. I for one would love some satsumadori out on the yard

. The influx of some new genetics for breeds like malay, cubalayas, sumatras, etc... would be priceless in itself. Keep us up to date on this, sounds like a great opportunity for all of us working with the extremely rare breeds.

I wonder who he´s getting the Minohiki from. As there are only 2 serious breeders on them in Germany and me in the Netherlands, and we work together to perfect the lines here. Of Onagadori i wonder aswell..as there are only a few breeders on those too, that work together and hardly ever sell hatchingeggs at all. They combined forces too and choose with great care who to sell birds to.
Not trying to be negative here...just i have in my mind that maybe your friend might receive birds of a person that doesn´t have pure stock if he claims to have all these breeds...here too are people that try to make money on birds.

Actually, I wasn't talking about IDEAL's Orientals. I was talking about their Kraienkoppes. Do you think they have ruined their Kraienkoppe stock?
