Orpingtons - My Black and My Red Cockeral

MP I got a solid black orpington pullet with a blue x buff cross.I also have a solid blue one with no hint of buff so far.They are both about 10 weeks old right now.

I can remember about 4 years ago when i just started out with some Orps I bought a pair of Blue Orps at an auction. They were not big like the ones we have and the quality as I know it now was poor. I just plain didn't know anything then and was just still learning about keeping chickens. I breed the blue Roo to buff hens as the little blue rarely laid and egg. Of course most of the hatches turned out what you would expect with red /buff breast with blue overtones. I ended up giving these chickens to a friend who let them all freerange and I remember she had a group hatch out and something happened to the moma hen and she gathered them up and ask me to put them in a brooder for her. One looked white. He turned out to be a Splash cockeral throw back. Genetics are funny.

I agree...I really don't think the original hatch of chicks would all have the same colorings...genetic side is a funny thing ...I'm sure you would have a variety of colors and have to linebreed those back for generations to have something along the line of a true color..

Isn't it though. I also have a younger batch coming along and I believe there maybe another black on and solid blue.I think it has something to do with which pair is mated.In otherwords the same blue roo mated to another buff hen may not give that combination.I got these eggs from JAB "Julie" in Michigan on a private swap and she only has a Blue Orp roo and Buff hens.So I think Tuff Old Hen should breed her two pair together and may get some more like Big Red.
