OSB Coop Roofing Mistake

Hi there,

We recently decided to build our first coop- so exciting! However, we were a bit hasty in completing our roof and failed to put any kind of underlayment or drip edge between the OSB and asphalt shingles. Not even a layer of paint to protect the OSB- what were we thinking!?

Now that we're in this position, I'm wondering if there's anything we can do to better our roofing situation without a complete re-do. If we leave it as is- just OSB and shingles- how long can we expect it to hold up? We live in the Midwest and experience all 4 seasons.

We do not have much more $ to sink into this project. Any advice/experience will help us greatly!

*12/12 roof pitch if that carries any importance

It will probably last about a third of the guarantee if they were attached properly. (spacing, nailing, etc.)

I've used OSB for a roof with just EPDM rubber on top. But if I use shingles, I do the whole 9 yards - tar paper, drip edge, starter strip, shingles and a ridge vent.

You should still be able to get a drip edge to slip in under shingle. Go around all 4 sides. I've done it several times but most times you have to make a notch for a roofing nail thats hidden under the shingle.

When you get the drip edge slipped in fully, since there isn't any real way to nail it, lift up the edge of the shingle and black jack or silicone the drip edge and press the shingle back down on the drip edge to glue them together and you're good to go.

That’s great!!
I’ve seen a lot of builders who have not used tar paper on residential homes , I don’t recommend it because tar paper is needed.
I have reroofed a few 20+years later ( may have been a 20 or 25 yr warranty) they weren’t leaking or looking too good.
These homes also had OSB , so I wouldn’t worry too much about no paper (on a coop).Add the drip edge and you should be fine.
Depending on the setup you have on the roofing overhanging the sheathing? You might not cover all the drip edge when you install it as it can only slide in under the roofing so far before you hit the decking ( OSB).
I’m in the northeast, so four seasons here.

You can always go over it later down the road.
You have a good pitch.
Did you put a starter course on drip edge?
