Otis needs a feathery friend

I am currently looking for a non-human companion for my super sweet Rhode island red, Otis (who I only recently discovered is NOT a rooster) Is it best to stick with the same breed, or does it matter?

It really depends
if you do mix breeds try to have similar colors in both chickens
and let the other be nearly the same size as your rhode island reds before you let them stay in the same coop

Would it be best to get her a male companion, or would she be content with a female friend? I only want two, and purely for pet purposes so eggs and meat are not factors that concern me.

i would say hen because a rooster might try to mate with her and pull out her feathers on her back

Get her a hen. Unless you want otis to have no back feathers, And no back neck feathers.
