OUR CHICKS CAME EARLY, wait scratch that, our corpses came early =( -updated with pics-

I gotta ask, why did you order 35 chicks when you didn't have chick starter? I wouldn't feed raw egg. Maybe try some boiled egg mashed with cornmeal or oatmeal? Get them on a commercial chick feed as soon as possible though.

We have chick starter but the way eat got them they would NEVER be able to eat them. We had one that could MAYBE eat it. I doubt they still would eat it though, we have them on cooked egg and only a few are eating small peices. Oh and why not feed them raw egg? they would be dead now if we hadnt, they would have starved/froze to death if we didnt get that fat into them

How many total did you order? Did you get the optional heat pack that I think Ideal may offer? My friend and I ordered about 30 birds between us and we are in NH. It has been 10 degrees here and they all showed up great on the 2nd too! Did you notify the post office beforehand so they knew live babies were coming?

Yes the post were notified, they were supposed to call us and they did. They even let us come in after hours. We had about 42 chicks, about 16-17 alive and 35 dead but 2 might die overnight, 2 I think in specific will die but who knows what else. A lot of the feather footed died, cochins brahamas, a turken lived, but mostly what thrived were OEGB's or some sort of game, OEGB and modern I think. They have LONG legs (i love long legged chickens! well modern I love) and they run around like they have a gallon of sugar in them. The turken stomps around ruling the roost (its so cute, shes gentle and sweet but shes the only standard so she like rules the roost and she pecks the food off the other chickens!! LOL) and the other chickens havent made much of an impression yet, except for like being known for sleeping in water! Oh and when we brought in a mama chicken (she wasnt a very good mama) and she hopped out to find food we put her back in their little box with food and the turken hopped up next to her and tryed to eat with her! I love turkens just because of this one!

WOW!!!! That is sooo weird! I just checked out the chicken breed chart I use. It tells you all the specs for each breed ncluding ow they handle cold and heat. The birds that died are suppose to handle cold really well and the OEGB'S are not suited for cold but are hardy in heat and lived. Just a though - maybe some dork at the post office saw the live chick box and thought they were doing a good thing putting it directly on or in front of or under a HOT heat source! Could've overheated the poor things to death thinking they were just keeping them warm!!!!!

Nope, the dude just called me then my mom called him and he said that most of them were dead, and if it was overheated they would have stayed dead, they were in like a hibernative state. Plus we order chicks like every year, and this is the first year we order ideal and this is the first year we had more then 1 dead chick.
