Our Coop Coming Along

We decided to purchase the plans from Heath Bullard after tons of research. I will tell you they are serious plans and this coming from my husband and I who sat with an architect and designed our home from scratch.

I wanted to post some pics of the process. Not sure if this is the correct place.

Nice looking build, though I always have to ask about ventilation. Is the side of the coop that's currently open going to be solid or mesh? You'll probably need more ventilation if it's meant to be solid - aim for a minimum of 1 sq ft per bird or 10% of floor space, whichever is greater.

I wondered the same thing. We were going to add an additional 3 holes to the opposite side, but I thought that wouldn’t work for wind possibly. So we are thinking about adding a “window” of hardware cloth that can be shut, or propped open to the other side opposite the door openings. We modified quite a few things, making the storage and coop larger, also the length of the run and added side square footage to our run.

Looks stunning! And yes add more vents.

Windows (whether an actual window that slides, or awning style that props open) are good bets since they can be opened or closed if needed, plus provide natural light as well. I have 5 windows on my coop (along with gable, ridge, floor and under eave vents) but with good placement drafts aren't an issue, even during seasonal windstorms.

You could also consider putting a good sized opening on the wall facing the inside of the run (as the run provides cover from the elements plus some additional safety from predators). With that location you probably could just put some wire mesh in and frame it, no need to worry about making it so that it can prop open.

Do you mean Heather Bullard?

Good 'plans'(drawings) don't necessarily mean good 'design',
this coming from a career drafter/designer.

There are several deficiencies with this design,
lack of ventilation, nests too high, pop door to low...
.....but it sure is pretty and sturdy!
