Our Mixed Flock Journey!

Pics
We have 5 acres, but only have about 1.5-2 acres developed! The rest is sand and sagebrush! It's amazing how much you can fit on 1 acre! I had a horse -CB, but I had to sell him in 2008! I had sepsis and after that, I just didn't have the strength to take care of him! My husband was doing it for me and would have continued, he's the best, but the horse was mine and my husband had enough other things going on! I also had a 75g saltwater fish tank that I decided to give to a friend...same scenario as the horse! Some pictures below! We lost our yellow lab, Mr Drake, lovingly known as Drakers 💞 a couple of years ago, he was 14...miss him still! I also miss my horse! The barn is now full of our son's car parts, our lawn mower....you get the idea! I forgot how great it looked until I saw these pictures again! A pool picture and a picture of my beautiful Mr Bentley...we lost him a couple of months ago to kidney failure, still cry about it sometimes! He's sitting on the kitty wash station, which is disguised as a towel rack...lol!💞

After 25+ years, I finally talked my husband into an above ground pool! I got a fantastic deal on it, less than $500! That being said the steps cost the same. My husband built me a solar cover reel! I hope you can get one and not have to wait as long as I did...my kids "oh sure, now that we've all moved out you get a pool!"...lolView attachment 2065344

So many memories of my beautiful pets! Miss them all! 💞

I'm trying to get caught up. Was Mr. Bentley an Arabian? Handsome fella! 😀

So, I went to the feed store today and, well, this sorta happened...:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy😂
4 French Copper Black Marans! I'm so excited, I really want at least one rooster, hopefully they all aren't. We bought four to have a better chance of getting at least one of each! 1 Roo & 3 hens would be perfect! Time will tell!!! View attachment 2074607

Aha! You see??? CHICKEN MATH!!! :lau

Last week my husband finally found the time to fix a pipe that froze that waters our driveway treeline! He asked me to turn it on the next day! So I did as he asked only to hear a loud pop and to find myself soaking wet from a broken pipe! My husband informed me that it was caused by water hammer, I opened the main line to fast and didn't think to open a faucet to allow pressure to escape! Lesson learned!

Well the saga of the busted water line continues and I have learned a lot! First lesson, open a valve before you turn a main line back on and open it slowly or it might explode, get you soaking wet and cause your husband a lot of extra work! Second...after my husband repaired it he tells me that he hopes it didn't break something down lower...so the next day with that in mind, I open a faucet and slowly open the main line valve only to see water bubbling up down below! I call my husband and tell him that it broke down below and I will work on getting it dug up so that he doesn't have to! We cleared our land mostly by hand and shovel, we didn't have a 4X4 at that time, there was a lot of sagebrush that had to come out not to mention everything else you have to use a shovel for, so I am no stranger to using one. I tell you what, I'm dead dog tired, there were rocks, which was to be expected, but there were also roots from the tree's planted nearby! I persevered and was ready to take that pipe out, so that we could repair what I had broken. At that point my husband comes home...he thanks me for getting so much done. He asks me to show him where the water is coming out...I show him or I try to show him, no water leak! I explain to him again what happened early, he then tells me there is nothing wrong with the line, the valve is a stop and waste valve, but he didn't know where the leak was! All of this for nothing...well actually I've decided to look at it as a very good workout! Next time, I will wait until he is home! Lol!

Oof. What I have learned over the years from similar scenarios is, I hold flashlight and pass tools and keep my mouth shut, and let the guys make the big messes and the big decisions. Becuause if I make the decisions, I'll do sonething wrong and stupid and have to go back and fix it and it's gonna cost double in time and money. Although there are times I have made a suggestion and they later wish they had listened to me. Like that time they stapled the fencing cables to the grassy side of the posts and the horses leaned on it to reach the grass, popped all the staples off and ended up walking right through the fence the same day. I told them that would happen, but did they listen to the silly little woman? Nooooo, of course not. That was a day's labor wasted and a pasture damaged.
Oh, that’s funny! One of my chickens is Cutie :gig... because she is the cutest! View attachment 2081810

Awww! She looks like a Shmoo! :love From the Lil Abner comic strip. But Google. I am fading fast ....

I needed a good laugh today! Yeah, I'm with you, I've learned a lot over the years, messed up a lot, did a lot of things right and I'm sure that both of those things will continue to happen over and over...no matter how old I get! Sometimes I have a better idea on how to do something than my husband does, most times not...but I don't keep my mouth shut I still let him know what I think... 😂 Those horses know what they like and will do what they can to get to it...😂...that was a lot of work down the drain...I feel you!🙂

We were cleaning up leaves and brush around our pump house to make room for the pump to be installed...Looks like it will happen tomorrow...yay! Anyway, I found these quail eggs right next to the foundation under some grass! I was thinking that I would candle them to see if they were good, but as soon as I picked one up I could tell that they had been there a long time, they are super light and completely dried up! Now I need to figure out how to display them with my counter egg basket...when I get one that is! They are just to cute to throw away!

What a great find!!

I've been trying to introduce the breakfast mash to my French Black Copper Marans...they finally got brave enough to check it out, to discover what's in it is pretty tasty and it's not going to eat them...lol! I'm hoping they will learn to be as excited by it as the rest of the flock! I can't wait to see if I have at least one roo, yet I'm afraid that I might have at least 3! They are still to young to even begin to guess! The smallest one is clean legged and doesn't have as much white...so I'm very curious to see him/her grow! Sorry for the long video, I was waiting for the biggest chicken to get brave enough to join the feast...big chicken... 😂
