My One year old Rooster started out yesterday just find as usual.. Later in the afternoon. I discovered that he had become wobbly and was having a hard time keeping his balance. He looked alert in every other way. No runny poop, comb is bright and eyes are clear. I isolated him, put some vitamins in his water and set him up with his usual food. Layer pellets and a tiny bit of scratch. He usually resides with his hens in a coop with a large yard. The yard is grass and some clover,. No chemicals. Today he is worse. He is unable to stand at all. I have checked for injuries and he has good range of motion in his limbs. Poor thing is laying on his side. I am distraught and don't know what to do for him. He is a Blue Orpington and I waited almost a year to get him!!! Please any suggestions.

can you please post a picture of him so we can be of better help. how do his legs look? how is he holding them? are they sticking out in a un natural position? are his feet curled. he is paralyzed as you say? there are certain diseases that cause paralysis . Marek's is one of them but a picture would be of great help with the diagnosis. can you please post a picture so we can help.

I would NOT take him anywhere that had other poultry. you run a risk of exposing all the poultry there if he has a contagious disease! keep him isolated. please. post a pic and we can be of more help. but do NOT take him to a place that sells poultry! like a farm store. if he is contagious you run the risk of contamination.

Thanks I will try to get s photo. His legs are basically behind him as he lays on his side.
Everything else looks fine. His toes were curling yesterday. No I would not dream of taking him out anywhere.

Someone I talk to had the same problem. Gave her chicken epsom salt water. She thinks the chicken had gotten into something toxic. Who knows . It certainly wouldn't hurt.

Unfortunately we had to put this Rooster down. I am waiting for test results from the UK Lab.

It really sounds like Mareks! It affects the legs, making them unable to eat, but they stay alert all the way to the end....

I hope for your sake that isn't what happened!
