Partridge Rock Thread

Pics
Well, I am now waiting on my first hen to go broody for the season. We are planning on a major hatch out to replace flock that we lost do to dog attacks after we lost our farm dog. We have a new farm dog and she is 6 months old and already doing her job protecting the flock. Hubby is going up North and will be bringing down a dog kennel that we will put around the chick coop. That way I will not loose any when young. :) It just started getting warmer here so it will not be long now.

Great Picture!

No snow here in Woodland CA. Mine would really wonder what that white stuff was....

Mine do wonder... They think its going to get them or something. If I'm out there they jump on me! Refused to go outside for about 2 months when we had a build up of 12+ inches of snow. Grumpy chickens during that time!

Hello everyone! I am new to partridge rocks I bought 12 chicks from a hatchery. I just think they are beautiful hens! But I have a question! They are a fair abount smaller than the other chicks that came from the hatchery and arent growing as fast as them either. I mean they are growing, just not as quick as the others. Lol. Is this normal of partridge rocks to be slower growing? All are happy healthy birds. And what are their laying habbits like? Age, color, how many a week? Any info will help!! Thanks in advance!

My hens are a nice size. I would say equivalent to orpingtons and other plymouth rocks such as barred rocks. I'm sure there are differences strain to strain. I have PRs from both Murray McMurray and from Sand Hill. They are both very pretty and are a good size. They all lay a nice medium brown large to extra large egg and are very regular layers. My McMurray hens are a little darker than my Sand Hill hens and in general there is more variation in my Sand Hill lot. The roosters are nice and large and we processed the excess. Nice large beautiful birds. I did find my PRs from McMurray to be less hardy when young and I lost a few. One just seemed not to grow at the rate of the other birds. Then it died. A couple died earlier. After those losses they all did well. They are my two year olds and they were much better winter layers than my orpingtons and turkens.

Great info! All my chicks are from mcmurray, the other breeds I got were the brown egg layer assortment and ended up with some brahmas and red stars, and I think some cornish.. and a few other random un known chicks. But the P rocks are by far tje smallest of the lot. I havent lost any of the chicks and they are 2.5 weeks old.

They are not the fasted maturing breed but the do get to a nice size. They are supposed to be a couple of pounds lighter than Barred Plymouth Rocks. The Red Star will be laying eggs a month or more sooner than the PRs. The Brahmas will be a lot bigger than any of the others.

You will really like them when they start laying eggs....

Hey guys and gals I have a TSC I believe to be a cockerel but am unsure of what breed he may be. I was told he looked like some sort of partridge I been looking at pics on this thread and he seems alot like some I've seen here. I would like your opinions or point me in another direction of other breeds.
