Partridge Rock Thread

Pics
I have PR's from McMurray's that I think are wonderful hens - hardy, good foragers, steady layers (sorry I can't quantify that very well in my mixed flock, but this is by observation of them on the nests, and they seemed to lay pretty well thru the winter). They are not my friendliest birds - that would be the BO's and Cochins - but they are not really flighty, and they are by far my most beautiful hens, with the lovely partridge pattern and beetle-green-sheen black edging that just lights up in sunshine. None of them has been broody (which I actually appreciate, I have BO's for that). I don't have any roos, though, can't speak to agressiveness there, but the hens are assertive without being bullies to other hens. I've been very happy with them.

Hey All,

I started with PR chicks from a local (2 hours away on the coast) breeder last year. Out of 14 I got 12 roos! I kept two roos and found two more girls later on in the year - one is very friendly. I bred one roo with three hens (I lost one hen in winter) and got 14 chicks in my first hatch in March. I banded the ones with the defined striping and they are all cockerels. I sold all the pullets and just got an order of 21 PR's from Sand Hill yesterday.

I hope to maintain a flock and perhaps improve their personalities. I'd like to get them to be more docile and friendly like the Barred Rocks I've had. They aren't mean, just a little flighty and the boys fought through the fence after I separated them for breeding.

The chicks I bred were all very healthy and active. The ones from Sand Hill seem to be the same.

What do you think? A Copper Rock? or a Golden Rock? A Mutt?

Hey... Glad to find this thread... I got mine cause the feed store wanted to close up, they didn't want these babies to be by themselves. I hadn't even research on the breed. Now I have and I love my 2 3 mo. old girlies.

Hope you weren't affected by the tornadoes.... How long was it at 88? You'll probably be OK, I've heard of them going down to 50 for awhile and still being fine. Good luck

Here is one of my McMurray Partridge Rocks, Max(ine?) at 5 weeks. I don't know if she'll be as gorgeous as the others in this thread. I love this bird, and it loves me, lol. S/he will often pop on my lap just to visit, even when I feed ground up scratch in my hands. Out of the three breeds I have they are definitely the friendliest, even moreso than my Dominiques.

Oh, and Good luck to cybercat! Hope everything is ok, both in the bator and out.

I would say 99% chance Maxine there. I have two that were McMurray and one is very friendly. But most PR's I've had are a little skittish.

I just got 20 chicks from Sand Hill, hoping they warm up to us a little better. Also trying to spend time with them a couple of times a day.

I'll have to post some photos of Meat Head. I think it's a roo, but I'm a chicken noob. "He's" a bit younger than Maxine, and "his" comb is already a bit taller than hers. He's also a very muscle-ey chicken with chunky thighs and bare spots all over, lol. The body shape looks almost like some cornish or chantecler or something rather than more rounded like my other hens, if you know what I mean. I named him Meat Head bc that's what my Dad calls guys who spend too much time bulking up at the gym, ha!

It's also funny that you say they're more skittish. Of the three breeds I have, the PRs are my friendliest.
