Thanks, I will be setting up for eggs in the Spring again. I don't like to hatch and brood over winter - but if one of my Sillies decides to go broody, again - may I contact you?
I know what you mean - I used to feel sorry for the roadkills too - now I just say "another one that can't eat my birds".. I learned early on when raising chickens with my mother that Skunks were evil - one wiped out a batch of 10 week old juvies in one night - killed all of them.. I think there were 22, it killed 21 and left the last one brain damaged. You don't want to know what it did.. I had nightmares for a few weeks, reminds me of horror movies...
Yup, talking to Sonoran there. Mahogany and autosomnal red are not the same gene - they do not work quite same way. I don't know what Mahogany looks like - but it changes all red based pigment to darker - like she did with her Partridges. It also can be diluted and hidden. Autosomnal Red usually shows up in the wings of the boys as leakage - but it is also present in girl coloring - that's what the autosomnal means - not sex linked. I don't know if it adds darker color to red that isn't in the wings, chest and back of a bird. Mahogany does. It isn't on the chicken color calculator so I can't play with it - it may be more subtle than Mahogany and can't be shown in simple form?
I would love close up pictures of feathering - perhaps if you have time for a series of full bird, close ups - and possibly what they looked like as chicks? Ok, I admit it - I am a sucker for Partridge Silkie Chick pictures..![]()
