Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Thanks, I will be setting up for eggs in the Spring again. I don't like to hatch and brood over winter - but if one of my Sillies decides to go broody, again - may I contact you?

I know what you mean - I used to feel sorry for the roadkills too - now I just say "another one that can't eat my birds".. I learned early on when raising chickens with my mother that Skunks were evil - one wiped out a batch of 10 week old juvies in one night - killed all of them.. I think there were 22, it killed 21 and left the last one brain damaged. You don't want to know what it did.. I had nightmares for a few weeks, reminds me of horror movies...

Yup, talking to Sonoran there. Mahogany and autosomnal red are not the same gene - they do not work quite same way. I don't know what Mahogany looks like - but it changes all red based pigment to darker - like she did with her Partridges. It also can be diluted and hidden. Autosomnal Red usually shows up in the wings of the boys as leakage - but it is also present in girl coloring - that's what the autosomnal means - not sex linked. I don't know if it adds darker color to red that isn't in the wings, chest and back of a bird. Mahogany does. It isn't on the chicken color calculator so I can't play with it - it may be more subtle than Mahogany and can't be shown in simple form?

I would love close up pictures of feathering - perhaps if you have time for a series of full bird, close ups - and possibly what they looked like as chicks? Ok, I admit it - I am a sucker for Partridge Silkie Chick pictures..

I Just brought these, the owner had no idea what type of silkie it was but i am very sure its a Partridge Japanese Silkie? is it?
Hello and Welcome to the Partridge Silkie thread, and Welcome to BYC

They are Partridge Silkies. I don't think they call them Japanese any more? Are they bantams - or are they large fowl? We don't have the LF over here in the USA... but you have them over there. They look to me like they are bantams.

Very pretty girls! I think the one in the front on the bottom picture is a Blue Partridge, the other girl appears to be Partridge (black).

I love my Silkies - they make the best incubators and brooders!

And that's why I love this website. Having a look at the genetics of the Silkie's on other websites it is very confusing. Thanks for the insight I think you are on the money there. I want to breed them so what Silkie Rooster would you recommend?

If you can get a Partridge Silkie rooster that would be best. Another option is Buff - if you can find a "Smutty" Buff rooster he would work. The "Smut" is black in his wings and tail. You will want a golden boy, red is ok - but stay away from White or Black as those will mix up the genetics.

Your girls look to have nice stance. In the states we have gone overboard on the head crests (poof) so yours may seem "small" by comparison, but they look like nice birds to me.

Thanks.. I am checking often on the little guy so he is drinking and eating. Until now we already xan see improvments ;-)

But I tought that white is dominant gene and will always give white...but I probably didn't understand right hahaha

I am glad he is doing well.

White in Silkies is Recessive White - not Dominant White (there are two different genes). If there is only one copy it will "hide" and not show. The White Parent has two copies. that's why it is White, but it only gave one to the chick. Cross that chick back to its White Parent and you will get 50% White birds, and most will carry recessive White (75%)

Interesting mix and i like it, looked it up on google images for the buff cross Partridge chickens and not much showed up. Is it a rare breed?

Also another Question

I brought these hens yesterday for $40 each (AUS) and they are at the point of lay. Because I want to breed them in the future is that a reasonable price to charge considering there age? Or are the Pure White Silkie's worth more?. Personally I love the look of the Partridge Silkie's and want to breed them.
