Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Quote:
Interesting mix and i like it, looked it up on google images for the buff cross Partridge chickens and not much showed up. Is it a rare breed?

Nope, I did it because all I had was a good Partridge and a good Buff. Its not an official cross - but if you look up Smutty Buff you might find some. Tomorrow, when it is light, I can get a picture of my cross. I think its pretty too. More importantly to me, it keeps the partridge coloring correct. You can hatch out correctly colored Partridges.

I don't know anything about prices over there for the birds, but I bought my Partridge BQ pair for 50 dollars a bird, but they are very good stock. Point of lay is good age for birds.

I like the Partridge color better. Good Whites are easier to find but I value a good Partridge much more. Whites are easier to bred because any bird can be made White, so you can get a really good type of bird and paint it white.

Ok, here are the pictures of my Smutty Buff cross. The mother is a light Buff, the father is a dark "Partridge" from mixed background.

Ricki - blue feathers in tail so he carries Blue

Donna-Don - was so hoping this one was a girl.. ah well. Closer to Blue Partridge with a Black head.

Mother and Father of the Crosses - she is very light Buff.

This is Peggy, my keeper Smutty Buff girl. She didn't get the blue (drat) but she did get the pattern gene. I will be crossing her back to her Partridge father.

This is the three kids - Donna-don, Peggy and Ricki.

Here is angry momma and dark chest boy at the wading pool. I'm hunting for a picture of her that shows how red her head is.

OK here is a series of feather pictures for angry momma. I believe you can click on any picture and it will show it larger so you can pick up any details in the feathers you are interested in.

Here is angy momma's head. I know I have better shots with more red showing but you can see it in there.

Here she is in morning sun looking nearly blue, but the light is hitting her "helmet" just right and you can see the red highlighted.

This is interesting I think because you can see a darker red pattern showing in elongated ovals.

You know I am a visual person. That's why I take tons of pictures so I have picture records. If you need a picture of something just ask because I most likely have it.

I got to this picture and said "The End".... too funny.

I like her - and I can see how her "helmet" isn't as dark as it appears in the other pictures.

What do you think of the coloring on my Goggles?

I am hoping he has a good dark red that will darken the girls I have. If he turns all black and red (like your dark boy) I will be VERY happy!

How old is Goggles in that picture? Is this his shoulder wing area?

I think Goggles coloring is very good, you can almost see ribbons of color. I think dark boy was darker than that but maybe not since the lighting really changes what they look like in person. He seems to go through a lot of changes. I am wondering what happens with the next molt.

These are from June through September.

I real LOVE the green highlights in his wings and tail. He is really a dark boy, but most of these make him look light blue too. He is more charcoal looking than brown though. I just always thought a "good" partridge should have more gold and browns.

He was born May 18th, so in that picture (which was today) he is almost 5 months old (not quite). He does look like your boy earlier on - so I have high hopes he might get the darker coloring. The SOP calls for Rich Red feathers in the neck with a black center... no gold there....

The thing is, the gold and brown that we have in most of our birds is not in the SOP. The males call for a black chest - and Black/Reddish Bay feathering. Nowhere does it say gold or brown. Females only say Black and Reddish Bay - that's it! All the feathers say Black center with Rich brilliant red. That description matches the colors on my PWB - it does not match most Partridge Silkie males I have seen. They DO mention the green sheen in the tail and on most of the Black feathers, so your boy has it right there!

I don't know if you go over to the Genetics/Showing thread - but I put a Silkie cross girl up there with regular feathers, I think that is what we have been calling "Partridge". It is not Partridge, its a mish-mash of genetics with penciling. If I can find a way to turn that gold into the proper Reddish Bay - perhaps it would work. I don't think we will be able to get the penciling correct - but we can't see it so who cares...

I do like him a lot. I just thought he had something special about him. I really like his gold collar though - he has just a spritz of it over his tail too. Do you think the gold would count off in shows? I think I just like his rainbow of colors. But I know just because I like it, doesn't mean it is correct or show worthy. He has graduated from the bachelor pen to having his own pen with a girlfriend though. He will have a couple more as soon as they are done with babies or stop being broody. I will put Lucy (angry mom) in with him and the dark girl that changes in her pictures so much also. I have another young one coming up that will probably go in with him too. Do you think he has mahogany?

Is Goggles a Minky and Jasper son? (did I remember their names correctly?)

I remember you had mentioned that about the eggs before NOW! Ha! Ha! Sorry I slept since then!!! Yes, if you get a broody just let me know.

Yes, you got their names correct, but no, Goggles isn't their son. He was the only chick to hatch from shipped eggs when I was trying to get my incubator dialed in - he is from Brown Chicka Brown Cow's eggs. Jasper and Minky do have one chick Minky hatched that I am waiting to see what it is. I sure hope its a girl. She decided to set when I left for two weeks - so she hatched just after I got back.

I think your boy is closer to the correct color for Partridge - and I think his very darkness will count FOR him at a show. I know I have seen some very Gold Partridge boys - and they didn't do great, but they weren't last either. The light boys make light girls - and I guess Light girls are "ok" because that is what everybody shows. I am glad he has graduated to his own harem - I have one girl pretending to be broody but she isn't in the Silkie pen and she is low girl on the pole so I wouldn't trust her with your precious eggs. So - since my memory is probably worse than yours - does he have a name? Just "Dark Boy"? Lucy and Bucket Girl.. and a young one.. should be pretty!

I don't know if your boy has Mahogany, I don't even know if Goggles has it. I just know Goggles seems a lot darker than Jasper - but once he gets his adult feathers he may go the gold route instead of the red. Time will tell I guess... Jasper looks pretty good for a Partridge to me - even though he has the gold.
