Hi all,

I got my first ever chicks and one of them has pasty butt. I read on how to move the poop to open the vent again, but it seems when I gently rub with a towel it only temporarily solves the problem.. until she poops again, clogging herself up. How do I get rid of all this excess poo once and for all? I want to get rid of all the ooo on her butt, not just temporarily open the vent... but I also don’t want to rub to harshly, tearing any skin... Any other methods than a warm towel?

FYI my chicks are approx 1.5 weeks old.

Thanks

Katie

If I under correctly, there is dried poo stuck under its tail that’s difficult to remove, right? I had the same problem with one of my chicks. I dunked it’s booty in a cup of warm water to loosen up the poo. Then I gently got my fingernail between the poo and skin and kind of pushed or pinched it up. If it didn’t come easily, I didn’t pull. I did this everyday until it all came off. It took a few tries. The chickie is fine now and is a very pretty Japanese bantam. I’m sure lots of other people have good advice for you too.

Warm water with plenty of Epsom salt dissolved. Long soak. Then start to rub it off with a soft cloth. Can apply vaseline to the vent area. Add 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to their water.

Thanks everyone :) the warm bath seemed to do the trick. I gently rubbed it away and then snipped off the poo with some small scissors. It might’ve gotten a feather or two, but this girl is poo-free! For additional precautionaries I put some almond oil on her vent (I heard this prevents poop from sticking)
