The massive problem is that the government refuses to be responsible with money. When the money is gone, they refuse to learn to live within a budget. They keep searching for more money so they can keep spending. When they can't find money, they print money, which causes inflation (which is actually a additional tax on the masses).
It is a huge urban myth that the upper classes in this country can pay for everything needed to support the rest of us. They don't make enough money, even if you take every cent from them, to pay for all of everyone else's expenses. They already pay a lot more than anyone else. They pay 36% income tax to the feds while over a third of the population pays no income taxes at all.
There also seems to be another popular urban myth that the rich pay no taxes at all. That is simply not true.
I listened to a large group of protesters in the "occupy" movement shouting that every transaction in the stock market should be taxed. Well duh. Nothing like being stupid and really proud of it. Apparently, they don't pay income tax so they've never heard of the Capital Gains tax.
Let's not get into this increasingly popular idea that someone else should take care of all our needs for us. What happened to growing up, leaving home, and learning to support ourselves?
