Peafowl for 2013

I sold 10 pea eggs this weekend. I'm kinda sad because I won't get a chance to see the incubation process. But the girls are still laying. I collected 2 eggs yesterday. Lockdown was yesterday for 4 pea eggs, 2 BR turkey eggs and 12 guinea eggs. I didn't candle, so I don't know what's going on in the eggs. Hatch day is scheduled for Wednesday. Once that batch has hatched, I will put in all of the pea eggs that I will have collected for the week.

Question for all....... How long can you collect pea eggs before you have to incubate them? 1 week? 10 days? What's the magic number?

My first egg, also the largest egg (118 grams or 4.16 ounces :lau ), was laid 5-1 and put under a hen on 5-15, and as of yesterday, it's alive!

Kathy, how did I know that you weighed the egg ???????? :lau Good grief girl. I'm glad that I don't live over there with you. You would want to weigh me. :lau

Well that's good to know . So 14 days is still ok. :thumbsup

Sorry Pedda I know I didnt. I fail totally anyway when it comes to genetics in case anyone forgot. Also Minx I am incubating three eggs in the bator You can have any or all of them. Maybe one will be a boy for your boy friend

I don't know...I love more peafowl, but I don't really want any spaldings.

I know I have the spalding whites, but they were a surprise...I don't like turning you down especially because these are Goldilocks babies... I might have to think about it but the only variety I have on my wish list right now is some type of green peafowl, which is turning out to be harder than I thought, but someone contacted me recently that I have heard of before as having nice green peafowl so I hope all goes well...Destinduck are your boys Indo-Chinese or Javanese? This guy who contacted me has Javanese. As I am searching I am keeping you in mind if you still are looking for a green peahen. Also, if I do find someone good I will let everyone on here know. Right now I keep running into dead ends and finding more things out about green peafowl purity in the US and elsewhere.
MinxFox, I love TACO!! TOO CUTE !!!!!

Is that a baby crib that I see????????? You just gave me an idea!!!!!!

Yep that is a foldable baby crib! It works perfectly! We have a light that has a clamp on the end of it so you put say a log in the crib then clamp the light on it. I put a cup under the lamp to help make sure it does not fall down. Of course put one or two towels for the floor so that you can clean the poop and food. When the peachick(s) get to flying you attach a thin blanket overtop of the crib. I like how the sides are a thin mesh so that it is almost like a mini pen for the peachicks and they can see out. I think we got the crib at Wal-Mart.
Here is another photo of it with Peep and the whites:

I weighed the eggs on the date they were laid, date set and I weigh them every time I candle them as we're trying to document weight loss in eggs set under hens vs an incubator.

FWIW, the oldest egg in the incubator, egg #3, was laid on 5-3 and set in the incubator 5-12, but it died.

Remember that I am a complete novice when it comes to this pea egg "thing".

About the older eggs... what will be most telling is when they hatch. I wonder if the older eggs will take longer?

-Kathy

We'll have it all in a spread sheet that will include name of hen, date laid, date started, pipped and hatched as well as the weights along the way.

How often are you candling the eggs? I candle on the 10th day then again on the 20th. I only have them out of the incubator for 2 seconds to see if there is development. You do not have to weight the pea eggs, recording weight loss is usually done when you cannot candle the egg such as an Emu egg. Some eggs are small, some are large but they all grow the same. Any exposed drop in temp can harm the egg so the longer you have it out of the incubator the better the chance something can go wrong. Even my little silkie only gets off the eggs to drink and grab a few pieces of food at a time. Each one of my pairs is documented for future refernce with the date laid, date hatched, color and band number. When the chick is sold the buyer's info is recorded in case the bird escapes and is found.

I'm doing this way more than I should, but only because we're interested in how weight loss in an incubator set at 50% compares to weight loss under hens. We know we don't *have* to and we know there is a chance that the eggs might not hatch.

FWIW, candling on day 5 revealed faint veining in all eggs and by day 7 you can see it move.

Will I do this with the next 16 eggs that I have to set? Probably not, it's way too much work, I'm lazy, lol.
