DEMANDING MEASURES AFTER BIRD FLU IN BELGIAN POULTRY
Source Levende have APRIL 28, 2021
A recent bird flu infection in hobby poultry belonging to a trader in Waregem has major consequences: protection and surveillance areas have been set up around the infection center, which means that poultry farms in those areas are faced with restrictions, such as a transport ban.
Until recently, Belgium did not have to take such drastic measures in the event of infection in hobby poultry. The Netherlands does not do that either. In case of an infection of hobby poultry, the animals are killed, but such an infection has no further consequences for the farm poultry in the immediate vicinity. Nevertheless, the Federal Food Agency (FASFC) has decided to take measures that are usually only applied when bird flu has broken out on a commercial poultry farm.
The measures imposed by the FASFC are in line with the new European Animal Health Regulation, which took effect on 21 April. According to the AHR, contamination of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in hobby animals should also be regarded as an outbreak in which a protection and surveillance zone (bt zone) must be established. The Dutch government hopes to be able to secure another exception for this in Brussels.
