That brown hen came out of two light sussex parents. The same as the brother next to her, so now I like to say she a Sussex in tarn gear..lol Seriously though, I can't figure out where that came from, I'm thinking the lineage of my hen may have Sussex x Lohmann Brown in it.

Really? Wow!! Yes, it looks like a Lohmann mixed in.
 
Either way, she's beautiful @Erba! I learned of a new breed, well not a new breed, but for me it is....a Buckeye! Interesting because I am from Ohio (the Buckeye State) and they are slowly being bred out. I would love to be able to obtain a few and breed them over here....but between my wife and the EU, I don't see that happening anytime soon. So I dream of doing it.
Erba, how did you train your new birds to stay home? Or do they leave your grounds? We have to sit with ours to ensure they don't wonder into the neighbor's garden. That has already happened and she was not pleased.
Still waiting for a reply from the local club!
 
well PapaJohn.. I think your wife might be the lesser problem to get Buckeyes. :confused:

Isn't there a phone number you can call? They might not check their email all the time. I have found with chicken people (clubs in general) you get quicker responses when you call.

I would put a little fence to keep them from your neighbors garden... either chicken wire or a poultry fence. They are easy to put up and take down. Better than a grumpy neighbor.

@Papa John59 Well I didn't really train them as such, but my entire property is fenced in. We did that when we moved here for the dog and the toddlers at that time. My chickens did manage to find some holes though, because I think they thought the 1200m2 was boring after a while, and it did bother one neighbour of mine. They were jumping a lower barrier I had, to access his property to cut my hedges. So he raised that and all is good now.

Sussex are heavy birds, they can fly, but not so high, about a half meter off the ground or so, that I have observed.

Those buckeyes are really cool, I see why you would want them, made in your home state and endangered. A real soul project! If only we had a star trek beam, to beam birds and hatching eggs to us, eh?
