I am sorry to hear that. I think I lost a chicken to something similar. She died out of the blue, so I sort of wanted to know why. So chopped of her dead head off, and there was this terrible smell and masses of green slimy goop in her throat area, that looked like grass. It was all a bit gross and I quickly disposed of her. Still don't know what exactly it was.
sounds like she had the same problem or at least sour crop.
I thought about opening her up to find out what caused the blockage. But it was raining pretty good and I didn't want to get everything messy and me all wet.

I have more sad news. I have no more chickies. Last sunday they started to woble when walking and lay down a lot, so I took them to the vet, and by what he was seeing it was Mareks or it was a combined factor of hot weather/ coccidia/ overal weakness. Took them home, cared for them for a 1.5 day, but they were getting worse, so I culled them and took them to the vet again for section altough he isn't qaulified he/we took a well aducated guess. And think it is Mareks.

sorry for your loss.

before taking new chickens you must disinfect really good all the chicken area. it would be even better to wait for 6 months before you get new chickens.

Thank you.

I imeditaly desinfected and threw out what I could. I than informed everyone around me with chickens. But no one seems to know how long the virus can stay on your propperty. The info I can find is very contrary, from 2 months to a year. I'm curious to what the vet will say about it next week.

Oh no!!! I am sooo sorry!!! Maybe you could get vaccinated chickens (chicks) when you replace?

:hugs Sorry for all this ... @abpatchy
Good to do an autopsie. Because if its marek its in you're adult chickens. They can infect newcomers as long as they live. (from what I’ve been reading).

The first time I bought chicks I had a couple of them dying too. Started to read about chickens and chicken diseases. Now I am warned things like coccidiosis and marek can happen if you buy new chicks.

With Marek it can happen with you’re own hatched chicks years after getting new chickens in you're flock. Vaccinated chickens have a latent form of Marek they can pass on to chicks.

For me these hazards are the main reason why I only buy fertilised eggs if I want new chicks/chickens.

On another note, I had just one chick hatch from my back up hatch. It is brown, so proof that the old rooster has been crossed with a Lohman brown or an Isa brown as well, so he has got to go before I hatch anything else. He ( did the test) is with the week old shipped egg pullets and very tiny but enjoying the company.

I think you got me mixed up... It was BDutch who lost all his chickens. I "only" lost 2 of my hens.

That sucks... the problem with Sussex is that they are breeding hybrid chickens...making them look like Sussex and selling them as Sussex. Same with Maran(s)... (they call them Maran instead of Marans. People think they got pure bred Sussex.
