You can put old lettuce in the over with soft cheese and black pepper for 5 ninutes. Delicious.
I was able to pick up some lettuce last night for free. A lady a couple of towns over asked if anybody can use it. Enough for my chickens and the whole breeding club!!

what do you all think of my Xmass present?

Donaueschingen is not far from where some of the Light Sussex breeders are, but far enough away from me, for now. My run is covered, but my chooks won't be happy if they have to stay in there for too long. But maybe that's just me, thinking they need to roam, and they would be perfectly fine in there. 😄

I am afraid this bird flew shit is going to happen every winter. That means that we all should have a coop/run with enough space for all chickens. Many people say 1 m2 for average chickens is the minimum you need. For healthy and happy chickens you need 4 m2 for average chickens.

Right after Christmas I noticed a hen not behaving like she should. I watched her for a while. She wasn't eating and just standing around... no picking. When I picked her up her crop was full of water and no feed. Her poop was more water than anything! Of course after Christmas the bird clinic in Gießen was closed until 2021. Gave her some coconut oil and did the massaging... it didn't help.
I finally took her to a local vet. She emptied her crop and said that it smells like something bacterial. Gave her some antibiotics. She started eating some rolled oats with yogurt and mealworms. And fennel tea for digestion. At least something!! Her poop started being more firm again and last night her crop was actually full of feed again. So it seems like the antibiotics really helped. Would have hated to cull one of my breeders.
