Hey everyone! I have a vax question for you all, especially those of you in France. I have a broody hen who today received 5 fertilized eggs to hatch. With any luck, she'll live out her "dream" of being a momma.

It just occurred to me that if any of these eggs do actually hatch, they'll need to be vaccinated, at least for Mareks at 1 day old. All the recommendations I'm seeing is for the US. What is recommended for here? I don't even know if the older chickens I have, have been vaxed, tbh. The breeders never mentioned it, and I didn't think to ask. And how do you handle vaccinations, if you do them?

I think its almost impossible to vaccinate for Marek for just a few chicks.
If you have no reason to believe your flock is contaminated with Mareks disease I wouldn't try to get the vaccination. Your chicks are fine if the hens are not carriers of the disease.

If the chicks grow up healthy without Marek, and you keep your flock safe from newcomers in the future your flock is fine. Newcomers are a risk bc they might be carriers of the virus. With hatchery eggs you have nothing to fear for in the future if your current flock doesn’t carry Marek.

I always buy hatchery eggs if I want chicks/more chickens and do so for ten years now. Never vaccinated.

Only if your hens are already carriers , you chicks get sick. Then it will be necessary to buy vaccinated chick/hens in the future. Or… Other possibility is to let this flock get extinct, wait several months and start with a new flock from a trusted breeder who does not vaccinate.

No, no need to vaccinate for Marek. As soon as they hatch they could have been exposed to the virus. There is nothing you need to vaccinate with a mother hen. In Germany it is mandatory to vaccinate for Newcastle. I don't know if France has mandatory vaccinations.
Besides the doses are usually for at least 500 birds, usually 1000. So you would be paying a lot of money for those 5 chicks.
Good luck with your hatch!

here in greece only farms vaccinate chicks. each country has different concerns. marek's is not a threat for backyard chickens here while IB is. check what is a threat in your area.

Same in Bulgaria. Only hatcheries use vaccines. I think Marek is everywhere and over the years my flock has been affected. I never gave vaccines. What I am seeing now is the following: My core flock, from my own eggs are Marek resistant. When I buy eggs from elsewhere and I hatch them (on a broody hen), during the next Marek or Infectious Bronchitus wave only chicks from outside eggs die. Chicks from my own eggs do not get affected. Of course, there are strong ones from outside eggs that survive too, they have strong immune system.
This year I lost some hens from IB and only a few young pullets from Marek, hatched from outside eggs. Praise God I managed to save my young peachicks from IB. They were sick, close to death from IB, but survived and well and happy now.

On Marek - if anyone is interested I can share my tips, from my experience, for treating Marek sick chicken.

I’m lucky so far and never had Marek in my flock. That is why I never buy chicks/chickens. I like to buy hatchery eggs if I have a broody and want a few new chickens for maintenance.

Maybe @RoyalChick and @Mary Janet are interested in your experience/ knowledge about Marek’s disease.
