Pekin Duck Club!

Here are my two little pekin ducklings! Is it odd for them to have a little bit of a rasp to their peep? Other than the odd voice they are both doing amazing!

Welcome to BYC and to the Pekin club :) I don't remember my duck, Soleil, having a raspy sound to her peeps, maybe someone else has an idea what it is. You can also post your question to the main Duck board and see if there's anyone else who has experienced this. Good luck and thanks for joining us :)

Man! 32 pages already! I have some catching up to do!
Do my pair of 4 or 5 week old pekins qualify me as a member?
Here they are in their brooder, about a week ago.

I've been working on my old chicken coop. (OEGBs are in a newer one.) It's all cleaned out and disinfected. The ducks spent one night out last weekend, then it got cold again. So... back to the bathtub. They're on their way out again today, hopefully for good. I was going to give them another week or so before giving them free access to the run.
Do pekins do okay with ramps? The coop is raised about 2 feet off the ground. About the same height as the 100 gal. Rubbermaid watering tub I got for them to swim in. I put the tub just outside their door. I was going to build a small deck there, with a ramp going down to the floor of the run.

I'm thinking about getting pekin ducks. I have a couple of questions so I figured I should ask actual pekin duck owners.
I would like to know if I need to wash them and if I do would it be safe to use something like dawn dish soap or like a Johnson's baby shampoo? I would also like to know when I can start letting them swim freely and what I should do to let them swim in the meantime? What kind of environment do they need to sleep in and if they need to be kept warm when they are babies? Any information would help a lot and if anyone has any advice for a beginner I would appreciate it. I hope everyone's ducks are doing fantastic!!

Yep. Tub in the spare bathroom.... And it's all cleaned and disinfected as of a few hours ago. The ducks are in their coop.

the tub worked pretty well. The majority of the splashing went right down the drain. They still are messy, though. Aren't they?

I just got two pekin ducklings last week. They are hilarious. But i do have to ask, how do you sex them? And when do their feathers start to come in?

I ordered my pekin sexed so I didn't have to do the hard part. I know Metzers has a video on sexing on their website, but I wouldn't trust myself not hurt a baby. You can voice sex them as they get bigger. Hens quack, drakes make a raspy sound. Then when they fully feather the drakes tail will curl :) Welcome btw! Love to see some pix!
